Falcons win in Cincinnati

The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up a second-straight win, downing the host University of Cincinnati, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23). The non-conference dual match was held at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 2-1 in dual-match play, while the Bearcats drop to 0-1.

Junior Christine Chiricosta upped her record to a perfect 6-0 (3-0 singles, 3-0 doubles) in dual-match play, while freshman Maddy Eccleston did not lose a game in her singles win on Saturday afternoon. Chiricosta and Eccleston each posted singles victories as the Falcons won four of the six matches.

Chiricosta and Eccleston also teamed up for a doubles win, as BGSU took all three matches to capture the initial point. Senior Katia Babina, who posted a pair of victories vs. UC, teamed up with freshman Jade Johnson for an 8-2 victory at the second doubles flight.

In third-flight doubles action, senior Samantha Kintzel and sophomore Jessica Easdale picked up a win, also by an 8-2 outcome. The Chiricosta/Eccleston duo posted an 8-5 victory at the top flight to improve to 3-0 in dual-match doubles. The Babina/Johnson team, also 3-0 in the spring portion of the season, is 4-0 this year to date.

In singles play, all six matches ended in two sets, with the Falcons winning four. Eccleston won by identical 6-0 scores over Elise Woulfe at the fourth flight, while Chiricosta dropped only four games in her straight-sets win over Safiyya Ismail at the top flight.

Babina downed Lindsey Lonergan in flight-two action, while freshman Katie Grubb lost a total of just five games in her sixth-flight win over Abby Mayo.

The Falcons remain in Cincinnati for a Sunday (Jan. 24) match vs. Xavier University.
