BGSU faces UC, Xavier to conclude four-match road swing
The Bowling Green State University tennis team takes to the road for the second consecutive weekend, heading to the Queen City for a pair of matches. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will face the University of Cincinnati in Saturday (Jan. 23) action, before meeting Xavier University (Jan. 24) the following day.
The UC match will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club. Sunday's XU dual is scheduled to begin at noon.
BGSU is 1-1 on the young dual-match season. The Falcons split a pair of matches in Louisville, Ky., last weekend, losing to host UL by a 5-2 final before downing Morehead State, 6-1.
Saturday's match with the Falcons will be Cincinnati's first dual of the 2009-10 season. The Bearcats and Falcons certainly are familiar with one another, however, having crossed paths in a pair of fall tournaments. The 'Cats participated in the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 19-20), with the Brown and Orange a part of the Queen City Invitational (Oct. 2-4).
Xavier is 0-1 in dual matches, having lost to nationally-ranked Ohio State, 7-0, on Tuesday (Jan. 19). The Musketeers will face two Mid-American Conference opponents this weekend, taking on Miami on Friday (Jan. 22) before meeting the Falcons two days later. The Musketeers, like the Bearcats and Falcons, participated in both the BGSU Invitational and the Queen City Invite during the fall portion of the schedule.
The Falcons lead Cincinnati, 17-10, in the all-time series between the teams, including a 7-0 win at the Perrysburg Tennis Center last Feb. 8. In the teams' last meeting in Cincinnati, the Falcons downed the Bearcats, 7-0, two seasons ago (Feb. 23, 2008). Prior to that win, the Bearcats had won six of seven series matchups. BGSU is 10-3 at home, 4-7 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site matches (one early BG-UC match is site unknown). The Falcons are 9-8 against the 'Cats during Dean's head-coaching tenure.
BGSU leads Xavier, 13-4, in that series, and the Falcons are riding a five-match win streak vs. the Musketeers. The teams are meeting for the 10th-straight season in dual-match action. Last season, the Brown and Orange picked up a 6-1 win over XU at the PTC (Feb. 7, 2009). Two years ago, in the last road match vs. the Musketeers, BG also was victorious by a 6-1 count (Feb. 24, 2008). The Falcons are 8-1 at home, 4-3 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site contest vs. Xavier, and Dean-coached BGSU teams are 12-4 against the Musketeers.
Following this weekend's action, the Falcons will open the home portion of the schedule with a match vs. IPFW at the PTC on Jan. 30.
