Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team went seven minutes with a field goal to start the second half and Michigan pulled away after a tightly contested first 20 minutes for a 69-50 victory Thursday evening in front of 7,852 fans in Crisler Arena.
Bowling Green hung tough for the first 17 minutes, trailing just 28-27 but the Wolverines hit three three-pointers in the final three minutes of the half and took a 39-31 lead into the break. The Falcons remained in striking distance but the seven-minute shooting drought to open the second half was too much to overcome.
Michigan outscored Bowling Green 11-1 during that run and the Falcons missed their first 12 shots of the second half. Dee Brown scored in the paint with 12:32 to go to make it 50-34 but Bowling Green never got closer than 15 the rest of the way.
The first half was a different story as A'uston Calhoun came off the bench to score 14 points and the Falcons took it to Michigan early on. A Calhoun three-pointer tied the score at 7-7 and Scott Thomas score on a free-throw and a basket to give the Falcons a 10-7 lead.
Michigan used back-to-back three-pointers to build a 27-20 edge but Thomas knocked down his only three-pointer of the game and Calhoun added a basket to make it 28-25. Calhoun and Brown split free-throws on successive possessions to get Bowling Green back within one at 28-27. But that's when Michigan made its run.
Calhoun finished with a career-high 16 points but scored just two in the second half. Brown added 12 and Thomas had eight points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Poor shooting doomed Bowling Green throughout as the Falcons shot just 29.6 percent for the game and made only 2-of-14 three-pointers. Michigan also held a 43-30 rebounding advantage but Bowling Green committed only 10 turnovers, three less than the Wolverines.
Michigan improves to 2-0 with the win and Bowling Green falls to 1-2. The Falcons will return home to host Duquesne Monday evening at 7 p.m. BGSU is 1-0 in Anderson Arena this year with an 88-51 win over Ohio Dominican.
