Bowling Green, Ohio – Sophomore point guard Jordon Crawford scored a career-high 18 points in a career-best 33 minutes but the Bowling Green men's basketball team was unable to slow down a high-powered Duquesne offense in a 90-54 loss Monday evening.
Including its two exhibition games, Duquesne entered the contest having scored at least 100 points in three of its four contests this year, reaching as high as 118 points. The Dukes got out of the gates slowly but eventually got things going and shot 61 percent from the field. Duquesne also made 9-of-22 three-pointers (41 percent) and forced Bowling Green into 25 turnovers. The 25 turnovers were the most for a BGSU team since the Falcons had 27 in a game against Findlay on Nov. 25, 2003.
Crawford added three steals to go with his 18 points and made all five of his free-throw attempts and half of his six three-pointers. A'uston Calhoun was the only other Bowling Green player to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Craig Sealey had nine points, five rebounds and two steals off the bench and Scott Thomas ended with six points and six rebounds.
Duquesne's freshman point guard T.J. McConnell flirted with a triple-double and ended with 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. B.J. Monteiro was 9-for-10 shooting for a game-high 21 points as five Dukes scored in double figures.
There were a few bright spots for the Falcons on the evening. After making just 1-of-11 three-pointers in the first half, Bowling Green appeared to break out of its shooting slump by making 6-of-11 long range attempts over the final 20 minutes. As well, the Falcons went to the free-throw line nine more times than Duquesne, making 23-of-29 (79.3 percent).
Both teams started slowly as Crawford's steal and lay-up tied the score at 2-2 two minutes into the game. Duquesne quickly broke out, though, getting three-pointers from Mike Talley and Bill Clark before a McConnell lay-up made it 10-2.
Duquesne took its first double-digit lead on a McConnell lay-up with 13:30 to play in the first half at 15-4 but Bowling Green hung around for a bit longer. Calhoun made a pair of free-throws to cut the deficit to five at 15-10 and got two Sealey free-throws with 7:45 to go to make it 21-16.
With the score 24-17, Duquesne built a big cushion on a 13-0 run over 3:15 that concluded with a Clark three-pointer to make it 37-17. From there, Bowling Green never got closer than 17.
Duquesne improves to 2-1 on the season and Bowling Green falls to 1-3. The Falcons will head to Detroit to play three games in three days at the Legends Classic beginning with Niagara Friday at 5 p.m. The team will then play Detroit Saturday at 7 p.m. and Albany Sunday at 3 p.m.
