Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green men's basketball team forced 24 turnovers and held Adrian to 31 percent shooting in a rugged 51-36 exhibition victory Saturday in venerable Anderson Arena. The contest was the last opportunity for the Falcons to face an opponent before the season opener Friday at Howard.
Bowling Green played almost exclusively man-to-man defense, which is in direct contrast to a season ago when the team dialed up a zone defense for most of the year. That paid off as the Falcons had 11 steals, scored 16 points off of turnovers, and held Adrian to just 13 second-half points.
A'uston Calhoun, who played just six minutes in his first two seasons at Bowling Green (a redshirt season and his freshmen year in 2009-10), was the only Falcon in double-figures with 20 points in a team-high 30 minutes. He added seven rebounds, four blocked shots, and a pair of steals in a starting role.
No other Bowling Green player scored more than six points as the Falcons shot just 37 percent from the field for the game and made only 1-of-15 three-pointers.
Despite scoring just 51 points, the Falcons did show flashes of a more up-tempo style than in recent history. Bowling Green scored 14 fast break points and showed a desire to run the floor for easy baskets.
Adrian was led by Wesley Reed, who scored 14 points in the contest. Reed had 12 in the first half but Jordon Crawford was primarily responsible for shutting him down over the final 20 minutes. Dennis Mason finished with a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
Freshman Cameron Black tied for the Bowling Green team-high with seven rebounds, but the Falcons were beaten on the boards 38-33. The Falcons did, however, set the tone defensively with eight blocked shots.
After a first half in which neither team could gain momentum, the Falcons quickly put their stamp on the game. Leading 25-23 to start the second stanza, Bowling Green held Adrian scoreless for 5:19 and took a double-digit lead at 33-23. The Falcons continued to push and extended the lead to 15 on a Scott Thomas fastbreak dunk with 10:59 left to make it 41-26.
Bowling Green's lead ballooned to 19 points at 49-30 before settling on the final 15-point win.
The Falcons will open the season Friday at Howard at 7 p.m. before returning home to open the final season in Anderson Arena against Ohio Dominican on Nov. 15. The contest will be the second game of a doubleheader and is scheduled to begin at approximately 8 p.m.
