
NIU Beats Falcons In Three Sets

DeKalb, Ill. – Three players had at least 10 kills but the Bowling Green State University volleyball team lost to Northern Illinois in three sets Saturday night, 25-20, 26-24, 25-18.
Against one of the best teams in the MAC, the Falcons used a varied attack to attempt to upset the Huskies. Danielle Tonyan returned from injury to post a team-high 12 kills, while Paige Penrod and Lindsey Butterfield had 10 apiece. Penrod added the team's only ace and three blocks and Ashley Dunn had 15 digs.
The first set was tied at 17-17 but Northern Illinois scored the next six points to put the set away. The Falcons had their best shot in the second, battling back from a four-point deficit to tie the score at 23-23. After a Sarah Angelos kill put Northern Illinois on top, a service error tied the score again at 24-24. But the Falcons had an attack error and Lauren Wicinski followed with a kill for the 26-24 win.
The third set was nip-and-tuck early and Northern Illinois held a slim 18-16 lead but the Huskies closed with a 7-2 run to put the match away.
NIU hit .284 for the match, holding Bowling Green to .179 attacking. The two teams each had 43 digs but the Huskies had 7.0 blocks, compared to 5.0 for the Falcons.
Northern Illinois improves to 24-5 overall and 10-4 in MAC play. Bowling Green falls to 8-21 overall and 2-12 in league play. The Falcons will close out the regular season next weekend, playing at Kent State Friday night and at Ohio Saturday evening.
