November 08, 2010 | Men's Basketball
Columbus, Ohio- The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame has announced its 2011 class, and former Falcons Don and Mac Otten are among the newly inducted members. The Ottens will become only the second pair of brothers, after Jim and John Paxson, to ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The official induction will be May 21, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio.
Don Otten, a graduate of Bellefontaine High School, was born April 18, 1921. Otten graduated from Bellefontaine in 1942, and became one of the all-time great big men at Bowling Green State University. Standing at 6-foot-11.5, Otten was one of the men directly responsible for the banning of goaltending in 1945. Don Otten led the Falcons to National Invitation Tournament appearances in 1944, 1945, and 1946. He was a consensus All-American in 1946 and, upon graduation from BGSU, Otten played seven seasons in the National Basketball League and National Basketball Association. Otten was named the NBL's Most Valuable Player of the 1948-49 season. He passed away on Sept. 18, 1985.
Mac William Otten, a 1943 graduate of Bellefontaine High School, was born December 16, 1925. Otten joined the Falcons a year after his brother's graduation, leading the Falcons to a 79-20 record and two National Invitation Tournament appearances. Although Mac was considerably shorter than his brother, he often played center for the Falcons. He was named the team's Most Valuable Player of the 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons, and consequently was named captain of the 1948-49 team. That 1948-49 Falcon team finished No. 10 in the final Associated Press rankings, defeating No. 3-ranked St. Louis 80-74 in the NIT quarterfinals, led by Mac's 22 points. Upon graduation from BGSU, Otten played for Tri-Cities and Waterloo of the NBA during the 1949-50 season.
