Bayer Named Fifth-Team All-Freshman by Phil Steele

Alex Bayer, a red-shirt freshman on the Bowling Green State University football team was named to Phil Steele's 2010 All-Freshman Team this afternoon (Dec. 15). Bayer was one of seven members from the Mid-American Conference to earn mention by Phil Steele.
Bayer, a native of Pickerington, Ohio, played in all 12 games in 2010, making four starts at tight end. The first-year player finished the season with 22 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown. Bayer continued to see his role increase as the season went along, finishing with 16 of his 22 grabs in the final six games of the season.
Bayer had a career-best five catches for 77 yards in a 28-27 loss at Temple and caught his first career touchdown in the fog versus Miami on Nov. 10. In the final game of 2010 the freshman added three receptions for 88 yards versus Western Michigan, earning Honorable Mention Tight End of the Week by the College Football Performance Award.
Bayer was also a major contributor on special teams, serving as the team's holder on extra points and fields for the second half of 2010.
