Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team fought back from 17 points down in the second half to get to within two late, but the Falcons went scoreless in the final two minutes for a 59-52 loss to Western Kentucky Wednesday evening.
Bowling Green's shooting woes continued to hamper the team's efforts Wednesday and the Falcons trailed 39-22 with 14:19 to play. Western Kentucky still held a 14-point lead at 44-30 with 10:00 to go but that's when the Falcons opened up the offense and got back into the game.
A Jordon Crawford lay-up and a Scott Thomas free-throw made it 44-33 before a Cameron Black lay-up cut the deficit to nine. Crawford scored on a pair of technical free-throws with 7:23 left to make it 44-37, the closest the game had been since the first half.
After Western Kentucky's Steffphon Pettigrew slammed home a pass from Kahlil McDonald, Crawford connected from three-point range to make it 46-40. The Hilltoppers' Caden Dickerson answered with a three to extend the lead back to nine but Dee Brown scored on a jumper and two Black free-throws with 5:01 left made it 49-44.
Western Kentucky made 3-of-4 free-throws to get the lead back to eight but Crawford again came up big with a three-pointer to bring the Falcons within five once more. Eventually, Dee Brown scored on a jumper with 2:45 left to make it 54-50 and after a Western Kentucky turnover, Danny McElroy scored inside on a beautiful pass from Thomas to make it 54-52.
Western Kentucky's Cliff Dixon threw away the inbounds pass, giving the Falcons a chance to tie the score but Bowling Green missed on two shot attempts and the Hilltoppers closed out the game with five free-throws for the win.
Crawford led the Falcons with 15 points and Brown had 10 points and five rebounds, while Thomas ended with seven points, a career-high six steals, and four assists. In all, Bowling Green had a season-high 19 steals, which is also the MAC high for a single game this year. McElroy added a career-best four steals to go with 11 rebounds, while Brown, Luke Kraus, and Crawford each had two.
Bowling Green shot just 31 percent from the field but had 17 offensive rebounds and forced 29 Western Kentucky turnovers. The Falcons attempted 24 more shots than Western Kentucky but the Hilltoppers went to the line 19 more times and scored 12 more points at the charity stripe.
Western Kentucky improves to 4-5 on the year and Bowling Green falls to 1-8. The Falcons will be at home Sunday to host Isaiah Thomas' Florida International squad at 2 p.m. for Sam Hornish Jr. Day.
