Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball outscored Northern Illinois 46-31 in the second half to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit as the Falcons defeated the Huskies 73-69 Wednesday night in Anderson Arena.
For the fourth time this year, Bowling Green won a Mid-American Conference game after trailing by at least seven points at the break. The Falcons used a 15-6 run in the first four minutes of the second half and then took over late to get the win.
Northern Illinois scored 15 consecutive points in a span that lasted just over three minutes in the first half to take a 38-27 lead at the half. But Joe Jakubowski's three-pointer just 12 seconds into the second half got it back to a single-digit game and the Falcons continued to pour it on.
Otis Polk scored on a lay-up inside to make it 38-32 and the Falcons got within four on a Polk offensive rebound and putback with 17:44 to go to make it 40-36. Bowling Green trailed 44-38 when Scott Thomas scored on a lay-up and followed it with a dunk at the 16:00 mark to cap the early run.
Bowling Green was unable to take the lead until Dee Brown knocked down a three-pointer with 10:42 to go but the two teams traded buckets until the late moments. Xavier Silas made two free-throws with 1:34 to play to put Northern Illinois on top 65-64 but Erik Marschall made his only basket of the evening 10 seconds later to give the Falcons the lead for good.
Following that basket, Silas missed a three-pointer and the Falcons ran the clock down to 44 seconds before Jakubowski was fouled. He made both free-throws to give BGSU a 68-65 lead and the Huskies' Michael Patton missed a three-point attempt with 33 seconds left to tie the game. From there, Bowling Green made enough free-throws to keep the Huskies from cutting into the gap and came away with the 73-69 win.
Thomas finished just one point shy of his career-high, scoring 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He added six rebounds and two assists. Polk had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds but fouled out late. Marschall added 10 rebounds as well. Brown had 14 points and made 2-of-4 three-pointers.
The Falcons struggled with turnovers in the first half and gave the ball away 14 times in the first 20 minutes but had just five in the second half. The team held a 36-31 rebounding advantage behind 13 offensive boards and Bowling Green shot over 50 percent from the field for the second game in a row, finishing 27-of-52 (51.9 percent). The Falcons were 57.7 percent in the second half, making 15-of-26 shots.
Bowling Green also scored 40+ plus points in the paint for the second straight game, holding a 44-32 edge inside. But Northern Illinois made up for it with a 48-12 scoring advantage from the bench. Michael Patton, who entered the game averaging 3.1 points per game, had 17 on 5-of-9 three-pointers and Sean Kowal, who averaged 9.3 points entering the contest, had 18 points, including four dunks.
Northern Illinois falls to 8-15 overall and 4-7 in MAC play with the loss. Bowling Green, now 12-11 overall and 5-6 in league play, hosts Miami (Ohio) Sunday at 2 p.m. to start the team's second trip through the MAC East. Miami defeated the Falcons 64-52 the first time the two teams met this year.
