Bowling Green, Ohio – Otis Polk got the Falcon faithful fired up with a pair of rim-rattling dunks during a 14-0 run to open the second half as the Bowling Green men's basketball team beat Miami 67-64 in a Valentine's Day matinee Sunday afternoon in Anderson Arena.
Polk finished with 12 points and eight rebounds but his inspired play during the first five minutes of the second half could not be measured in the stat sheet. He helped the Falcons overcome a 33-27 halftime deficit, brought a raucous home crowd to life, and put his team in the driver's seat coming down the stretch of a typical hard-fought Mid-American Conference game.
After Dee Brown scored on a lay-up 20 seconds into the second half, Polk completed the first of his two rim-rattlers with a tomahawk jam while leading the fastbreak to cut Miami's lead to two points. Erik Marschall, who finished with a team-high 17 points, tied the game with 17:34 to go and Polk's next dunk followed in thunderous fashion, again leading the break. He was fouled while completing that score and made the free-throw to give the Falcons a 36-33 lead. Scott Thomas scored on a lay-up and Joe Jakubowski made the first Bowling Green three-pointer of the afternoon to cap the run and put the Falcons on top 41-33.
From there, Bowling Green led much of the way, although Miami did fight back to move in front, taking a 51-47 lead with 7:52 to play. But Brown knocked down his only three-pointer of the night to start a 10-point run. Marschall gave the Falcons the lead for good on a lay-up with 6:11 to go, Thomas added a free-throw and Jakubowski hit his second three-pointer to give Bowling Green a 56-51 lead. Thomas capped the run with another free-throw for a six-point lead with 4:06 to go.
Miami did get back within one point on a couple of occasions, but Bowling Green made 7-of-8 free-throws down the stretch and the RedHawks never had a shot to take the lead in the final minute of play.
Marschall made 7-of-10 shots and added seven rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. Brown had 11 points and Thomas' streak of 10 consecutive double-figure scoring games ended with just six points, but he contributed in other fashions by posting 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Marc Larson added nine points off the bench and Jakubowski finished with eight.
The first time the two teams met this year, Bowling Green struggled inside, scoring a season-low 14 points in the paint. But the Falcons turned that around this time, holding a 40-16 edge in points inside. Bowling Green also held a 34-27 rebounding advantage, including 12 offensive boards, while committing just eight turnovers, four less than Miami.
Once again, Bowling Green shot well in the second half, making 13-of-23 shots (56.5 percent) in the final 20 minutes, including 3-of-7 three-pointers after missing all six long-range attempts in the opening half.
With the loss, Miami falls to 11-14 overall and 8-4 in MAC action. Bowling Green improves to 13-11 overall and 6-6 in league play and will travel to New York to play Buffalo Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Bulls are one game in front of the Falcons in the MAC standings and defeated Bowling Green on a last-second three-pointer in the first meeting this year.
