BGSU now 11-3 after fifth consecutive win
The Bowling Green State University tennis team opened Mid-American Conference play on a successful note, posting a 6-1 win over Ball State University Friday afternoon (March 26). The match was held at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in MAC action, and BGSU has won five consecutive matches. The Cardinals drop to 6-8 and 0-1, respectively.
The win was the Falcons' fourth in a row over Ball State. BSU's last win over the Brown and Orange came on March 31, 2006.
In doubles play, BGSU won two of the three matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Junior Christine Chiricosta teamed up with freshman Maddy Eccleston for a decisive 8-2 win at the top flight. The Cardinals got a narrow 8-6 win at the middle level, but BG picked up an 8-4 victory at flight number three.
At that third flight, senior co-captain Samantha Kintzel and freshman Katie Grubb combined for the win. For Grubb, a native of Elkhart, Ind., Friday marked her first collegiate action in her home state.
Another Indiana native, freshman Jade Johnson (Fort Wayne), was also playing in the Hoosier state for the first time as a collegian. She picked up a victory at the sixth singles flight, downing Ball State's Katherine Rist in three sets.
BGSU won five of the six singles matches, capturing three-fourths of the matches that required a third set. Chiricosta and Kintzel each won in the minimum two sets, with Chiricosta downing Hayley Hall at the top flight, and Kintzel winning in third-flight action. Kintzel dropped only three total games, all in the second set, in her sweep of Dena Boulieris.
Senior Katia Babina downed Georgina Thomson at the second flight, while sophomore Jessica Easdale picked up a victory over Sarah Hebble at the fifth level. In all three of BGSU's three-set wins, the Falcon competitors won the first set, lost the second, but bounced back for the win.
Kintzel's two wins on Friday give her a total of 137 combined career victories in her career. She is ninth on the BGSU career list. Babina and Chiricosta now have 125 and 119 overall wins, respectively. Babina has moved into sole possession of 14th place on the BG career wins list, while Chiricosta -- just a junior -- is now 18th in school history in overall victories.
The Falcons cross back over the Ohio-Indiana border, heading to Oxford for a Saturday (March 27) match with defending MAC regular-season and tourney champion Miami University. That dual is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Hepburn Varsity Courts on the MU campus.
