Defending champions end BGSU's five-match win streak
The Bowling Green State University tennis Falcons picked up wins at the top two singles flights, but host Miami University captured the other four singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon (March 27).
With the win, the RedHawks improve to 9-5 on the season and 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play. Miami won the 2009 MAC regular-season and tournament championships. The Falcons fall to 11-4 and 1-1, respectively, and the loss snapped a five-match winning streak for the Brown and Orange.
The hosts pulled out the doubles point by the slimmest of margins. MU's team of Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald picked up a victory over senior Katia Babina and freshman Jade Johnson at the second flight, but the Falcons evened things with a victory at flight number three. Senior Samantha Kintzel and freshman Katie Grubb posted an 8-4 win over their RedHawk foes.
At the top flight, junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston fell just short, losing by an 8-6 outcome to Miami's duo of Megan Martzolk and Stephanie Danesis. The match was tied, 4-4, before the RedHawks scored three-straight points. Chiricosta and Eccleston rallied to within 7-6 before MU was able to close out the win.
In singles action, Miami captured the first two matches to take a 3-0 lead on the day. Honiball downed Eccleston at the fourth flight, while Martzolf topped Kintzel at the third level. Martzolf, now 14-0 at number three singles this year, was extended to a third set by Kintzel before pulling out the win.
Chiricosta got the Falcons on the scoreboard with a victory over Anastasia Dracheva at the top flight. The BG junior lost just five total games in the victory. But, MU clinched the match as Wald downed sophomore Jessica Easdale in fifth-flight action.
At the sixth flight, MU's Sydnee Bridger accounted for the RedHawks' fifth point with a victory over Grubb. The two players split their first two sets before Bridger eked out a decision, 10-7, in the super-tiebreaker.
Babina rallied after losing the opening set to defeat Danesis at flight number two. Babina captured a 6-2 win in the second set, then downed Danesis by a 7-5 score in the third set.
The Falcons play just one match next weekend, opening the home portion of the MAC schedule with a Friday (April 2) contest vs. Western Michigan University. That match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at BGSU's Keefe Courts, weather permitting.
