Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University held its annual Spring Football Game as the defense dominated in the first half and held off a late charge from the offense for a 64-62 victory under the lights Friday night.
With the graduation of record setting quarterback Tyler Sheehan and record setting wide receiver Freddie Barnes, the offense started slowly but picked up speed as the game wore on. With a modified scoring system that gave points to the defense for three-and-outs, defensive stops, fourth-down stops, and turnovers generated, the defense built up an early lead. But the offense was able to score points by generating first downs, touchdowns, and field goals, and the unit came together during the second half.
Defensively, Darius Smith had two interceptions, including arguably the most exciting play of the game in which he rumbled 61 yards before Justus Jones caught him at the one-yard line and forced a fumble. Eugene Cooper pounced on the ball to keep the defense from getting a score. Dwayne Woods Jr. had the only other interception of the game, returning it 12 yards. He also tied for the team high with seven tackles and had one tackle for loss.
Chris Jones disrupted a number of plays in the backfield throughout the evening, getting three tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks. Keith Morgan and Lewis Parks had two tackles for loss each. In all, the defense had eight quarterback sacks and 14 tackles for loss.
Offensively, Willie Geter looked sharp, carrying the ball eight times for 60 yards (a 7.5 yard per carry average). John Pettigrew, though, had the most opportunities of all the running backs, toting the rock 14 times for 44 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Erique Geiger had nine rushes for 33 yards and Mark Mays had nine carries for 28 yards and a rushing touchdown.
In a quarterback race that appears to be wide open, Matt Schilz captained the first-unit, going 15-of-28 for 133 yards and two interceptions. Kellen Pagel was 7-of-19 for 93 yards and a pick, while Aaron Pankratz was 6-of-13 for 60 yards and the lone passing touchdown of the evening. Caleb Watkins went 3-for-5 for 51 yards.
Kamar Jorden led the team in receptions with 10 grabs for 87 yards and Shaun Joplin added four catches for 66 yards. Justus Jones had four receptions for 53 yards and Steve Dunlap had four catches for 36 yards and a touchdown.
On special teams, Jerry Phillips averaged 35.6 yards per punt on five kicks. Phillips was also 1-of-2 on field goals, making from 21 and missing from 34. Stephen Stein missed from 25 yards.
