BGSU snaps four-match losing streak, ties last season's win total
The Bowling Green State University tennis team got back on track Friday afternoon (April 16), posting a 5-2 win over Northern Illinois University. The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 12-7 overall and 2-4 in MAC action. The Huskies drop to 7-11 and 1-6, respectively.
The victory enabled BGSU to tie the overall win total for all of last season, with at least three matches remaining in the 2009-10 campaign. Friday's win also snapped a four-match losing streak, the longest in four years, for the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons captured all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead on the afternoon. At the top flight, junior Christine Chiricosta teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston for an 8-5 win over NIU's team of Brooke Forsberg and Emily Rogers. Chiricosta and Eccleston rallied from 5-2 down to win six-straight games.
At the second flight, senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel also picked up an 8-5 win, topping the Huskie duo of Kathryn Friedlund and Sara McLaughlin. Freshman Katie Grubb and sophomore Jessica Easdale posted a victory at the third flight, winning by an 8-4 outcome.
The Brown and Orange captured four of the six singles matches to salt away the victory. Babina, Chiricosta, Eccleston and Kintzel all won in straight sets for the home team.
Chiricosta's match was the first to wrap up, as she downed Friedlund with little trouble. The junior lost just one game in her 6-0, 6-1 sweep at the top flight.
Eccleston lost a total of only four games in her fifth-flight win over Martina Schnapp, with that victory giving the Brown and Orange a 3-0 lead. Kelly Phillips topped Grubb at the sixth flight, giving the Huskies their first point, but Kintzel finished off a straight-sets win over Brittni Fausett in third-flight action to clinch the victory for the Brown and Orange.
Babina downed Rogers at the number-two flight, with a 6-2 win in the first set and a 7-5 triumph in the second. The final match to finish saw McLaughlin gut out a win over Easdale after the two had split their first two sets. McLaughlin captured the mini-tiebreaker to complete the day's action.
The Falcons complete the regular-season schedule with a pair of home matches next weekend. BGSU will host Akron in Friday (April 23) action before facing Buffalo the following day (April 24). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts, weather permitting, with 'Senior Day' festivities taking place prior to the UB match.
