BGSU captures doubles point, but MAC preseason favorites rally for victory

With the win, the Zips improve to 17-2 overall and 6-1 in MAC play. Akron was picked to win the league's regular-season and tournament titles in the preseason coaches poll, and Akron is listed 73rd in the nation in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. The Falcons fall to 12-8 and 2-5, respectively.
Entering the final day of the regular season, the Falcons still could finish anywhere from the fifth to the seventh seed for the MAC Championships, which begin next week.
On Friday, the Falcons battled the Zips through doubles play, with the hosts capturing two of the three matches to earn the initial point. Junior Christine Chiricosta teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston to pick up an 8-3 win over twins Angelina and Angelika Jogasuria at the top flight.
Akron's second-flight team of Zara Harutyunyan and Anya Baronayte had posted an 8-3 win of their own, downing senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel, but the Falcons led from start to finish in the third-flight match, closing out that win to capture the doubles point.
In that third-flight contest, Falcon sophomore Jessica Easdale and freshman Katie Grubb broke out to an early lead, winning the first four games. UA's duo of Prang Pantusart and Carolina Castro Cota won four-straight games to cut a 7-1 deficit to 7-5, but Easdale and Grubb closed out the win with a victory in the next game.
In singles play, however, the Zips won all six matches, including five in straight sets. Pantusart downed Easdale at the fourth flight, while Harutyunyan topped Chiricosta in first-flight action. Harutyunyan, now 18-1 in dual-match singles play this season, is currently the 113th-ranked singles player in the nation, according to this week's ITA rankings.
Angelina Jogasuria closed out her third-flight win over Babina, while Angelika Jogasuria was able to eke out a victory over Kintzel at the fourth flight. Kintzel gave her UA foe a battle before falling by identical 6-4, 6-4 scores. That fourth-flight decision gave Akron the fourth point needed to win Friday's match.
At the sixth flight, Grubb was BGSU's lone singles player to win a set, downing Jeremie Benjamin by a 7-6 score in the opening set. But, Benjamin rebounded for a 6-2 win in the second set, then eked out a victory in the third-set 'super tiebreaker.' Benjamin won by a 10-7 result.
Eccleston and Baronayte, like their sixth-flight counterparts, battled through a 7-6 opening set, but this time it was the Zips who came out on top. Baronayte took a one-set lead with the narrow win, then downed Eccleston, 6-2, in the second set.
The Falcons close the regular-season schedule with a Saturday (April 24) match against the University at Buffalo. Saturday's contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather, the match would be held later in the afternoon at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
Following the UB match, BGSU will prepare for next weekend's MAC Championships, which will be held from Thursday through Sunday (April 29-May 2) at Western Michigan University's Sorenson Courts.
A win over Buffalo on Saturday would put the Falcons and Bulls into a tie for fifth place in the final regular-season standings, with BGSU earning the fifth seed for the MAC Championships by virtue of the head-to-head results. A BG loss to Buffalo would leave the Falcons in a sixth-place tie with either Eastern Michigan or Ball State, and the sixth or seventh seed for the conference tourney. A BG loss and a Ball State win would make BG the sixth seed, while a Falcon loss and EMU win would drop the Brown and Orange to the seventh seed. The MAC standings, Friday's results and Saturday's schedule can be found below.
