With the win, the Bulls improve to 8-8 overall, and finish with a 4-4 MAC mark. The Falcons drop to 12-9 and 2-6, respectively.
BGSU finishes the regular season in a tie for sixth place in the nine-team league, and the Falcons will be the seventh seed for next week's MAC Championships. BG will face second-seeded Akron in quarterfinal-round action on Friday (April 30).
UB took an early 1-0 lead after winning at the first and third doubles flights. The second-flight match went to the Falcons, courtesy of senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel. That duo downed UB's Tamara Markovic and Kira Golenko by an 8-4 outcome.
In singles action, the visitors won at the first and third flights, before sophomore Jessica Easdale got a point for the Falcons with a straight-sets win over Diana Toia at the fourth flight. But, UB clinched the win with victories at the second and sixth flights within minutes of one another.
Freshman Maddy Eccleston downed Golenko at the fifth flight, in the lone match to require a third set. After the two split their first two sets, Eccleston won a lengthy tiebreaker. The Toledo native dropped a 6-4 opening set before rallying for a 6-2 triumph in the second set. Then, Eccleston pulled out a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker.
Junior Mary-Catherine Beck topped UB's Sofya Ivanyuk in an exhibition match to conclude singles play.
The match was 'Senior Day' for the Falcons, with fourth-year Falcons Babina and Kintzel recognized in ceremonies prior to the match.
As mentioned, the Falcons will be the seventh seed for the 2010 MAC Championships, and will meet second-seeded Akron in quarterfinal-round play on Friday (April 30) at 2:00 p.m. at Sorenson Courts on the Western Michigan campus in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The BGSU-UA match will mark the teams' second meeting in as many Fridays. Akron downed the Falcons, 6-1, Friday afternoon (April 23) at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
WMU will host the four-day, nine-team MAC Championships. The BGSU-Akron winner will advance to Saturday's (May 1) semifinal round. The league tourney championship match will be held on Sunday, May 2, with the winner earning the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
