Berger Named Freshman Of The Year; Fulk Named All-MAC
May 12, 2010 | Softball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green's dynamic softball freshmen were honored as some of the best in the Mid-American Conference Wednesday as Paige Berger received three awards, including being named Freshman of the Year, and Hannah Fulk was recognized twice.
Along with being named Freshman of the Year, Berger was an obvious choice as one of ten players on the All-Freshman team and was also named First Team All-MAC in the utility (non-pitcher) position. Fulk was named Second Team All-MAC at shortstop and also made the All-Freshman team.
Berger set a new program record by hitting 12 home runs in her first campaign with the Orange and Brown and her .713 slugging percentage ranks second in program history. She was a dominant force during conference play, with a .383 batting average, .465 on-base percentage, and .783 slugging percentage in 22 league games. She also led the MAC with seven homers and 23 RBI while sprinkling in some speed as well on a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen bases. Berger's versatility defensively was critical to Bowling Green exceeding preseason expectations. She started the team's first 26 games at first base but moved to second for the final 14 games after an injury to a teammate. With Bowling Green needing a win in the team's final game of the regular season to earn a bid to the MAC Tournament, Berger's two-run RBI single in the first inning was all the offense the team would need in a 3-0 win over MAC regular season champion Kent State.
Fulk played her role as lead-off hitter perfectly for the Falcons, leading the MAC in on-base percentage at .464 and walks with 26, while ranking sixth in the league with 11 doubles. Her walk total is the fifth-most in a single season in program history and her .536 slugging percentage ranks 15th. She still has an opportunity to move into the top 15 seasons in program history in doubles and home runs, in which she has four.
Bowling Green was predicted to finish last in the MAC East Division by vote of the coaches in the preseason poll but the Falcons exceeded those expectations by tying four fourth place and qualifying for the MAC Tournament, in large part due to the play of the team's freshmen. BGSU enters the MAC Tournament with a record of 13-27 overall and 9-13 in MAC play.
