Phil Steele's College Football Preview, one of the nation's most informative preseason football magazines, announced today (May 19) that six members of the Bowling Green State University football team earned a spot on the 2010 Preseason All-MAC Team. Ben Bojicic earned third-team honors, Willie Geter and Kevin Alvarado were named to the fourth-team, while Tyler Donahue, Chris Jones and Eugene Fells earned honorable mention.
BGSU was the only team in the Mid-American Conference to not have representation on the first or second team, which was the same in 2009. Last year Tyler Sheehan, Shane Steffy, Nick Iovinelli, P.J. Mahone, Jerett Sanderson and Freddie Barnes were all honored, but none found a spot on the first or second teams. The Falcons finished 2009 with a 7-6 record (6-2 in the MAC) while advancing to their fourth bowl game in seven years.
Bojicic, a native of Farmington Hills, Mich., and a 2010 team captain, started in 10 games last season, and has started 22 games in his career. The junior helped lead a unit that led the league in passing yards per game (316.2), while allowing just 27 sacks throughout the year.
Geter, also a 2010 team captain, ran for a career-high 705 yards and nine touchdowns last season. The senior ended 2009 playing his best football, recording 114 yards and three touchdowns versus Toledo and added 96 yards and two scores versus Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl.
Alvarado recorded 28 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2009, including 2.5 sacks versus Miami. The junior from East Chicago, Ind., played in 12 games last season and is one of two members of the BGSU defensive line to be honored by Phil Steele.
Donahue, a second-year starter at right tackle for the Orange and Brown, started all 13 games in 2009. Donahue will join Bojicic as one of only two returning starters from last year's offensive line unit.
Jones, who will be entering his second year with the Falcons, played in all 13 games along the defensive line in 2009, recording 29 tackles. The sophomore from Brownsburg, Ind., had a career-high five tackles versus Ohio and matched that career-best versus Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl. Jones had his first career sack at Marshall and forced a fumble in the win at Miami.
Fells, a fifth-year senior for the Falcons, has never started a contest for the Orange and Brown, but is expected to start at linebacker in 2010. Fells, a team captain, played in all 13 games last season, recording 44 tackles. The Palatka, Fla., native recorded a sack versus Central Michigan, while forcing a fumble and blocking a punt in a win versus the arch-rival Toledo Rockets.
