BGSU lands transfer from Coastal Carolina
Bowling Green State University tennis coach Penny Dean has announced the addition of Mary Hill to the program. Hill, a transfer from Coastal Carolina University, will join the Falcons this fall and will retain three seasons of eligibility.
“I am thrilled to have Mary joining the BGSU tennis team this fall,” said Dean. “She is a talented, experienced player and will become an integral part of building the 2010-11 Tennis Falcons. The addition of Mary gives us a definite Northern Indiana flavor.”
Hill, a native of Munster, Ind., had an overall record of 21-9 in singles play for Coastal Carolina in 2009-10. She competed primarily at the sixth flight, posting an impressive 18-4 mark in dual matches. That record included a 4-1 ledger in Big South Conference matches.
Hill finished the season by winning nine of her last 10 singles matches. In fact, after a 3-5 start to her collegiate career, Hill went 18-4 over the rest of the season.
In doubles action, Hill had an overall record of 20-9 on the year, including a 16-6 mark in duals. She and teammate Paty Cortes competed mainly at the second flight in dual-match play. That duo advanced to the Round of 16 in the main draw of doubles at the ITA Regionals in the fall, and also won 12-straight matches in dual play from Jan. 23 to March 15.
A 2009 graduate of Munster H.S., Hill finished her career as the winningest girls singles player in Indiana High School history. She posted a 104-1 career record for the Mustangs, and earned All-State First-Team honors in all four years. Hill led the team to four-straight state tournament appearances, including three finals berths. The Mustangs finished second at the team state finals from 2006-08 before placing third in '09.
She was undefeated as a senior, going 28-0 at the number-one singles flight and becoming the first player from Northwest Indiana to win a state championship. She earned the Times Female-Athlete-of-the-Year award, and also won the Mental Attitude Award at the state tourney, as voted by the coaches. In 2009, Hill was rated as the #85 high-school senior in the country by the Tennis Recruiting Network.
Hill had a 25-1 record her junior year, including a third-place finish at the state championship. The only loss of her career came that season in three sets in a state semifinal match (a loss which she avenged the following year in the championship match of the individual state tournament). She played at the second singles flight in her first two years, going 24-0 and 25-0, respectively. Hill also played individually at the Nation Open, winning the singles title in 2002 and '04 and the doubles crown in '05.
Dean and the Falcons finished the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 12-10. BGSU loses the services of two seniors, co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel, off of that squad.
Hill is the third addition to the roster for the 2010-11 season. BGSU signed Nikki Chiricosta (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and Emily Reuland (Oswego, Ill./Rosary) to National Letters of Intent during the November, 2009, signing period. Chiricosta is the sister of Christine Chiricosta, who will be a senior in '10-11.
