East Lansing, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team earned its first win of the 2010 season with a 25-23, 25-15, 27-25 victory over IUPUI in the team's final match of the MSU Showcase Saturday afternoon.
Senior Noelle Spitler, who was named to the MSU Showcase All-Tournament Team, had a career-high 13 kills with a .524 attack percentage as Bowling Green hit .283 for the match and held IUPUI to just a .120 swing percentage. The Jaguars had more attack errors than kills through the first two sets until posting 16 kills with just two errors in the third.
Bowling Green, on the other hand, shook off some of its attack troubles of the first two matches of the weekend with just eight errors in the last two sets. After hitting .094 in the first, the Falcons went for a .345 percentage in the second and .395 in the third.
Freshmen Danielle Tonyan and Paige Penrod combined for 21 kills and only six errors as the rookies played like veterans. Senior Sam Fish directed the offense with 29 assists and added a team-high 12 digs on the defensive side of the ball. BGSU held a 41-39 edge in digs for the match, getting 11 from freshman Laura Avila.
Bowling Green turned around a three-point deficit in the first set with a 7-1 run that put the Falcons on top 19-16. BGSU looked to be in control when IUPUI called a timeout after an attacker error that gave the Orange and Brown a 23-18 lead. But the Jaguars scored three in a row and scored two more after a Spitler kill to make it 24-23. But IUPUI had a service error and the Falcons escaped with a 25-23 win.
The second set was tied at 3-3 but three Tonyan kills helped BGSU build a six-point lead at 10-4. The Falcons continued to extend the lead and scored the final three points of the set for a 25-15 win.
The third set was tight throughout and neither team took more than a two-point lead for the entire frame. IUPUI got a service ace to take a 24-23 lead but Tonyan and Penrod had back-to-back kills before an IUPUI kill that tied it at 25-25. Penrod added another kill and Fish finished it with a kill for the 27-25 win.
IUPUI falls to 0-3 with the loss and Bowling Green improves to 1-2. The Falcons will have the week off before competing in the Florida Invitational against Florida, Colorado State and Albany Friday and Saturday.
