No. 15 Colorado State Beats Falcons In Three Sets

Gainesville, Fla. – No. 15 Colorado State moved to 4-0 on the year as the Rams defeated the Bowling Green State University volleyball team Friday morning by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 at the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida.
Colorado State hit .295 for the match and served up seven aces to pull away from the Falcons in each of the three sets. BGSU stayed in the match by outdigging and outblocking the Rams. The Orange and Brown had 46 digs and 4.0 blocks compared to just 43 digs and 3.0 blocks for Colorado State.
Freshman Paige Penrod led Bowling Green with 10 kills and another freshman, Ashley Dunn, had 12 digs. Sophomore Kari Galen had five kills and a team-high three blocks, two of which were of the solo variety. Yet another freshman, Laura Avila, led the team with 21 assists.
Bowling Green fell behind 7-1 early in the opening set and trailed by as many as 10 points before rallying late behind by three consecutive Penrod kills. The second set was closer early but Colorado State slowly built a lead during the middle of the set to get the win.
BGSU led 10-9 in the third set after a Lindsey Butterfield kill but Colorado State reeled off three consecutive points and the Falcons never led again. Bowling Green, though, did tie the score at 17-17 after a Danielle Tonyan kill but the Rams scored four of the next five points and never looked back.
Bowling Green (1-3) will be back in action Friday evening against the tournament hosts, playing No. 6 Florida at 7:30 p.m. in the second of three matches at the event.
