Game Notes Versus Marshall (27 pages)
Falcons Host Marshall in Home Opener
The Bowling Green State University football team will host Marshall on Saturday night under the lights at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be carried on BCSN.
Scouting the Falcons
The Falcons are led by second year head coach Dave Clawson, who is 7-8 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference. Clawson is 65-57 in ten-plus years as a head coach, including five years at Fordham and four at Richmond.
Offensively the Falcons have a new signal caller under center by the name of Matt Schilz. In two career starts, the redshirt freshman has completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 483 yards and one touchdown.
When Schilz is distributing the ball his main target is junior Kamar Jorden. The Darby, Pa. native, who spent two years at Hudson Valley Community College before sitting out last year has 23 catches for 279 yards. The 23 grabs is tied for the most in the nation.
Senior running back Willie Geter has 143 yards in the first two games of 2010, including a pair of scores. He ranks 16th in school history with 1,581 yards.
Defensively, the Falcons opened 2010 with seven new starters, with five of those new starters leading the team in tackles. Linebacker Dwayne Woods is tops on the team with 23 stops and is followed by Jovan Leacock (22 tackles), Keith Morgan (20 tackles), Champ Fells (16 tackles) and Calvin Marshall (12 tackles).
Falcons Lose Rematch With Tulsa, 33-20
The Bowling Green State University football team dropped a 33-20 decision to the Golden Hurricane in Tulsa, Okla. The contest was a rematch of the 2008 GMAC Bowl.
BGSU (0-2) got out to a fast start after senior Angelo Magnone recovered a fumble at the Tulsa 44-yardline on the opening drive of the game. The Falcons drove 44 yards on 14 plays, capped by a one-yard Matt Schilz touchdown run.
Tulsa answered with a 20-0 run before BGSU's Dwayne Woods intercepted a Tulsa pass and returned it to the Golden Hurricane's 1-yardline. Senior Captain Willie Geter plunged in for a one-yard score on the next play to get the score to 20-14, but Tulsa answered with a 74 yard drive in less than a minute to regain the two-score lead.
The Falcons looked to have scored as time expired in the first half but Jorden was called for pass interference in the Tulsa end zone to negate the score.
To start the second half Jorden once again looked to have scored on a 79-yard touchdown pass from Schilz, but a holding penalty wiped the seven points off the scoreboard.
Following a Tulsa touchdown and a pair of field goals to extend the lead to 33-14, Schilz added his second rushing score of the game on a naked bootleg from the 2-yardline.
Marshall Scout
Marshall may bring an 0-2 record to Northwest Ohio on Saturday night, but those losses came versus No. 2 Ohio State (45-7) and No. 23 West Virginia (24-21). Marshall led the contest with the Mountaineers 21-6 as the fourth quarter began but surrendered 15 unanswered points in the final 5:12 and then missed a 39-yard field goal in overtime to give WVU the win.
Marshall is led by quarterback Brian Anderson, who has completed 64.9 percent of his passes and is averaging 182.0 yards per game. His top target has been Aaron Dobson, who is averaging 77.0 yards per game.
Defensively Marshall is allowing 34.5 points and 499.0 yards of total offense. Mario Harvey leads the team with 26 tackles and Vinny Curry has four sacks in the early 2010 campaign.
2009 Recap Versus Herd
BGSU marched up and down the field versus the Herd all game, but could manage just 10 points, falling 17-10 versus Marshall back on Sept. 19, 2009.
The Falcons dominated the statistical categories: first downs (23-15), passing yards (383-100), and total offense (393-346), but cashed in just once in the red zone on four different opportunities.
Versus C-USA
The Falcons have not beaten a Conference USA opponent since the 2004 GMAC Bowl where BGSU upended Memphis 52-35. (0-3 since with losses to Tulsa, 63-7, Marshall, 17-10 and Tulsa, 33-20).
Jorden Earns CFPA Award
Kamar Jorden was named an honorable mention wide receiver of the week by the College Football Performance Award, announced on Monday (Sept. 12).
Jorden had a game-high 14 catches for 168 yards versus Tulsa. The 14 grabs are the fifth most in school history in a single game.
Jorden's numbers could have even been much larger if not for a pair of penalties. As time expired in the first half Jorden was called for pass interference on a jump ball in the Tulsa endzone to negate a 47-yard score. The Falcons very next play Jorden weaved his way through the Tulsa defense to record a 79-yard touchdown, but that catch was wiped away due to a holding penalty back on the offensive line.
Wright Joins Jorden With CFPA
The College Football Performance Award also honored Bryan Wright with an Honorable Mention Punter of the Week award.
Wright averaged 48.0 yards on six punts including a career-long 68-yarder. He added three punts downed inside the opponents' 20-yardline, including one all the way down to the Tulsa-1.
Much Too Young
The Falcons enter 2010 with 44 of their 85 scholarship players being either true or redshirt freshmen. Combine that with five players that played as true freshmen last year, the Falcons have a total of 49 players (57.6 percent) that have one year or less in playing experience.
Meet Matt Schilz
From 2000-03 Josh Harris threw for 7,503 yards and was followed by Omar Jacobs and his 6,938 yards from 2004-05 and Tyler Sheehan was next, throwing for 10,117 yards from 2006-09. What is in store for the newest Falcon quarterback, Matt Schilz?
In his first career start the redshirt freshman was 22-of-43 for 221 yards and a touchdown. His most impressive drive came on BG's second series of the game. Schilz completed a 19-yard strike to Kamar Jorden (on 3rd and 17) and followed that up with an 18-yard completion to Tyrone Pronty (on 3rd and 15) to help the Falcons take an early 7-0 lead on Troy.
Last week at Tulsa Schilz completed 29-of-40 passes for 262 yards and added two rushing scores.
In two starts the redshirt freshman has completed 51-of-83 passes (61.4 percent) for 483 yards and one touchdown.
Other Falcons' First Two Career Starts
Josh Harris vs. Ohio (11/10/01) and Northwestern (11/17/01) - 43-of-68 for 558 yards and 4 TDs/244 rushing, 4 TDs

Tyler Sheehan vs. Minnesota (9/1/07) and Michigan State (9/8/07) - 66-of-101 for 683 yards and 3 TDs
Little Giant
While Willie Geter may be one of the smallest guys on the team (5-7, 176), he continues his march up the record books.

Take Me to Your Leader
BGSU junior Kamar Jorden currently leads the nation with 23 receptions through two games. Jorden, who made his first career start two weeks ago versus Troy, had nine grabs for 111 yards versus the Trojans, which was impressive, but nothing compared to his 14 catches for 168 yards last weekend at Tulsa.
Not that it was that long ago, but if you remember Freddie Barnes, he finished 2009 with a nation's best 155 grabs, which broke the former NCAA mark for catches in a season (142).
Nation's Reception Leaders
1. Kamar Jorden (BGSU) 23
T.J. Moe (Missouri) 23
3. Ryan Broyles (Oklahoma) 21
4. Conner Vernon (Duke) 18
Justin Blackmon (Oklahoma St.) 18
Freddie Numbers?
Through two games BGSU's Kamar Jorden has 23 receptions for 279 yards. Flash back just one season, after two games in 2009 Freddie Barnes had 25 catches for 227 yards. Last season Barnes had 17 catches versus Marshall. What will Jorden do?
A 1,827 Day Investment
Wide receiver Calvin Wiley invested a lot of time at BGSU before gathering in his first career catch. You see, Wiley is a sixth-year senior for the Orange and Brown. After redshirting in 2005, the Detroit, Mich., native suffered injury after injury from 2006-09. Wiley was granted a sixth-year of eligibility this past spring and took full advantage of the opportunity.
Prior to Troy the last time Wiley saw game action was on Nov. 21, 2006, but did not record a catch all season.
When it is all said and done Wiley first took the field on Sept. 2, 2006 and did not record his first reception until Sept. 4, 2010, a span of 1,827 days.
Old School
While Calvin Wiley is clearly the “old guy” on campus, many of his wide receiver teammates have been around for a while as well. When the Falcons line up for their first offensive play versus Marshall it is expected to see sixth-year Wiley, joined by fifth-year wideout Tyrone Pronty and redshirt junior Kamar Jorden. The fourth Falcon wide receiver is expected to be redshirt junior Adrian Hodges and you can't forget about fifth-year tight end Nick Rieke.
New Side of the Trench
Senior Nick Torresso spent 2007-09 as a defensive tackle for the Orange and Brown, but in 2010 the Chicago, Ill., native will be starting on the other side of the ball. Torresso is currently listed as a starting guard for the Orange and Brown.
In three years on the defensive side of the ball, Torresso recorded 38 tackles, making three starts.
Rimington Watch List
Bowling Green State University's Ben Bojicic was named to the Rimington Award Watch List, announced on Aug. 26. The award is given to the nation's top center.
In all, there are 37 players on the Watch List, including three from the Mid-American Conference. Bojicic, along with Kent State's Chris Anzevino and Central Michigan's Colin Miller are the lone representatives from the MAC.
The junior from Farmington Hills, Mich., is one of four captains on this year's Falcon squad.
The winner will be honored at Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 15, 2011.
Follow the Leader
Ben Bojicic, Eugene Fells, Willie Geter and Calvin Wiley will serve as captains for 2010.
Voice of “Champ”ions
The Bowling Green athletic department released its 2010 television commercial on Aug. 1, 2010. The 30 second spot features Falcons working out as they get ready for the season, but the special part of the commercial is that BGSU's Eugene “Champ” Fells does the voice-over for the commercial.
Wright Place, Wright Time
BGSU's kicker/punter Brian Wright is expected to handle most, if not all, of the kicking duties for the Orange and Brown this season. What wasn't expected was how he got here.
Wright spent the past three seasons as the kickoff specialist for the Michigan Wolverines. Wright graduated early and wanted to enroll into a graduate school, but Michigan did not offer the correct major.
Bowling Green did have this major (hospitality management), which allowed Wright to enroll in graduate school at BGSU and at the same time gave him the opportunity to play for the Falcons without sitting out a year.
30+ League
Since 2002 the Falcons are 51-6 when scoring at least 30 points and just 9-35 when scoring 29 or fewer. BGSU was 7-2 under Clawson last season when scoring 30-plus points.
Michigan Game at Noon; On ESPN or ESPN2
The Big Ten announced today that the Sept. 25 Bowling Green/Michigan football game will start at noon and be carried on either ESPN or ESPN2.
Michigan has started the year 2-0, while BGSU is 0-2 with a late loss at Troy and a 33-20 defeat at Tulsa. The Falcons will host Marshall in the home opener Saturday at 7 p.m.
More information will be announced on the Bowling Green/Michigan game as the date approaches.
