Falcons Compete in Great Smokies Intercollegiate for Second Straight Year
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team competes for the second time in less than a week when they take to the links of the Waynesville (N.C.) Inn Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 18-19) for the Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
This marks the second consecutive season that the Falcons will trek to North Carolina for this 36-hole event, which is in its 12th year. The tournament is held on a par-72, 5,922-yard course.
In 2009, the event was shortened to 18-holes by heavy rain, but Bowling Green produced its best round of the season in its season-opening tournament.
Susy Grunden, making her Falcon debut, paced BGSU with a score of 74, including a 35 on the back nine. Coupled with Lauren Glew's 77, the Orange and Brown totaled 311 for the tournament's lone 18 holes.
Both Grunden and Lauren Glew will return to North Carolina for their second tournament of 2010. Joining them will be freshmen Bailey Arnold, sophomore Amy Ruthenberg, and junior Paula DiFrancesco.
The question surrounding this weekend is simple – what can the team do for an encore after putting together the best 54 holes in program history?
At the Worldlink Fall Classic on Monday and Tuesday, Bowling Green (924) set the school record for team score after 54 holes. Individually, sophomore Susy Grunden set school records for 18-, 36-, and 54-hole scores. She also captured medalist honors for the second time in her career.
In their quest to put together another solid tournament, the team will face good weather conditions. Unlike 2009, this year's Great Smokies tournament will see temperatures in the 80s coupled with sunny skies.
One team goal will undoubtedly be to finish higher in the team standings; this would apply to both last year's Great Smokies tournament and last week's tournament in Texas.
Last year, despite the Falcons' season-best performance, they only finished 15th. Last week, the team's record-setting 54 holes resulted only in sixth place in the final standings.
To meet this goal, Bowling Green will have to beat out a a wide range of teams from across the Southeast.
The tournament field will be 24-teams deep. Aside from tournament host Western Carolina, the Falcons face schools such as Alabama-Birmingham, Appalachian State, Middle Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, and Winthrop.
(The entire tournament field can be found here.)
The first 18 holes will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday; the final 18 will begin with another shotgun start at the same time on Sunday morning. Bowling Green's contingent of five players will begin on holes 12 through 15.
A complete recap and full results will be posted after the conclusion of play on both days right here on BGSUFalcons.com.
