Grunden Wins Award for Second Time
This afternoon (Sept. 16), the Mid-American Conference announced that Bowling Green State University sophomore Susy Grunden has been named the first MAC Golfer of the Week for the 2010-11 season.
Grunden earns the honor after a record-breaking performance at the Worldlink North Texas Fall Classic in her home area of Denton, Texas.
Grunden opened the tournament with the best round of 18 in BGSU history, carding a 69. The previous record was 70.
She followed that opening round with rounds of 71 and 70. In all of Bowling Green women's golf history, players had registered only three rounds of 71 or better. Grunden matched that total by herself in one tournament.
Her 36-hole total of 140 broke the previous record of 145. Her 54-hole total of 210 smashed the previous BGSU women's record of 221 by 11 strokes.
Even better, Grunden helped the Falcons secure the team record for a 54-hole score. By finishing rounds of 316, 305 and 303, Bowling Green obliterated the old team record of 937 by 13 strokes, completing the tournament with a score of 924.
This is the second time Grunden has been named MAC Golfer of the Week. She won the award last October during her freshman campaign after she won the Zippy Invitational. In that tournament, Grunden finished with a 226 over 54-holes; that had been the third-best 54-hole score in BGSU history.
