BGSU wins five singles, two doubles crowns in season-opening weekend

All seven BGSU players who participated in this weekend's tournament won at least one flight championship. BGSU Invitational historical records are incomplete, but the total of seven titles is the Falcons' highest in at least 12 years.
No team scores were kept at the two-day, nine-team invite. Matches were held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, and at Bowling Green High School.
BGSU newcomers Mary Hill and Emily Reuland won titles at both singles and doubles, as each player went 6-0 in her first weekend of competition as a Falcon. Hill is a sophomore transfer from Coastal Carolina University, while Reuland is a freshman.
Senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomores Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb also won singles titles for head coach Penny Dean's team. Freshman Nikki Chiricosta teamed with Hill to win a doubles crown, while Reuland paired up with junior Jessica Easdale to capture a doubles title as well.
BGSU's seven competitors combined to post a singles mark of 18-3. The Falcons took five first-place finishes, one third and one fourth in their respective flights.
The Falcons' three doubles teams combined to go 8-1, with two championships and a runner-up finish.
Christine Chiricosta, the Falcons' lone senior, gutted out a three-set win over Toledo's Polina Guimaraes on Saturday, then lost just four games in a semifinal sweep of IPFW's Amy Recht later that day (two rounds of singles were played on Saturday and one on Sunday). Then, on Sunday afternoon, Chiricosta downed Youngstown State's Margarita Sadovnikova in straight sets, again losing a total of just four games.
In her four seasons at BGSU, Chiricosta has posted a singles record of 11-1 in the BGSU Invitational, with three flight titles.
Reuland had a successful debut as a collegian, breezing through her first two singles matches at the second flight. In those Saturday contests, she lost a total of seven games in the four sets. On Sunday, Reuland dropped the opening set to IPFW's Ingrid Ballus, but rallied for a three-set win to capture the title.
Easdale split her two Saturday matches, before falling to IPFW's Raquel Vescovi in a tightly-contested match on Sunday. Easdale lost the opening set in a tiebreaker, and fell by a 7-5 count in the second set to finish fourth in the third flight.
Nikki Chiricosta lost only two games in her collegiate singles debut, a win over Cincinnati's Caitlin O'Gara on Saturday. Chiricosta was defeated by Cleveland State's Nicole Janek in semifinal-round action at the fourth flight, but bounced back for a straight-sets win over Toledo's Alex Cristello on Sunday, and a third-place finish.
BGSU swept flights five through seven. At the fifth flight, Hill did not lose a set in her BGSU debut. She dropped a total of 14 games in those six sets, including wins over Xavier's Kelsey Kinnard, UC's Elise Woulfe and CSU's Alex Bush.
In flight-six action, Eccleston lost only eight total games over six successful sets. Her 'closest' match of the weekend was a 6-2, 6-3 win over IPFW's Caterina Kiefer in the first round. Then, Eccleston lost only one game vs. IUPUI's Danielle Haefele in the semifinals, and dropped just two games in a sweep of UT's Chrissy Coffman in the championship match.
Grubb also won her flight with three straight-sets victories. After an opening-round sweep of IUPUI's Jesika Bays, Grubb was extended to a tiebreaker in the first set against Yuka Kobayashi of IPFW. Grubb won that set, then closed out Kobayashi with a 6-1 win in the second set to advance to the final. On Sunday, she defeated UC's Lindsey Lonergan for the flight championship.
In doubles action, Christine Chiricosta teamed up with Eccleston for a second-place finish at the top flight, while Nikki Chiricosta and Hill went 3-0 to win the second flight. Easdale and Reuland were victorious in all three of their third-flight matches, giving them a doubles title and Reuland an overall 6-0 record on the weekend.
With Falcon sophomore Jade Johnson sidelined due to injury, classmate Katie Grubb teamed with YSU's Hannah Patton at the fourth flight. That duo lost a pair of matches.
Johnson, ironically, was the lone Falcon to win a flight title at the 2009 BGSU Invitational.
The Falcons will have a few days to prepare for the team's second tournament of the season. BGSU will head to East Lansing, Mich., for the Spartan Invitational from Friday through Sunday (Sept. 24-26).
