BGSU Flag in Huntington, West Virginia
Huntington Mayor Makes Good on Mayoral Challenge Wager
September 22, 2010 | General
When the BGSU football team played host to Marshall last Saturday, September 18 in their 2010 home opener, there was more than just a non-conference victory on the line. Courtesy of Bowling Green Mayor John Quinn's latest “Mayoral Challenge,” the Falcons and Thundering Herd were also playing for the pride of their respective cities.
In the spirit of friendly competition, Mayor Quinn called on Mayor Kim Wolfe of Huntington, West Virginia (where Marshall University is located) to issue a challenge.
The challenge consisted of a “friendly wager” hinging on the outcome of the game. If the Falcons emerged victorious, Mayor Wolfe would have to display a Bowling Green flag at Huntington's City Hall for the duration of the week following the game. If Marshall left BGSU with a win, Mayor Quinn would fly a Marshall flag at Bowling Green's City Hall for the following week. The “losing Mayor” would also send evidence to the other in the form of a photo featuring them with the flag displayed appropriately.
Well, courtesy of the Falcons' 44-28 victory, Mayor Wolfe had one extra item to pack in his luggage for the bus trip back to Huntington, West Virginia late last Saturday night…you guessed it, a Bowling Green flag! And in the spirit of good sportsmanship, Mayor Wolfe has since made good on the “friendly wager,” as is apparent by the photographic evidence provided.
Also of note, Mayor Quinn improved to a perfect 3-0 in his “Mayoral Challenge” career, with victories in the past taking place in 2007 (BGSU Football defeated Western Kentucky) and 2009 (Mayor Quinn defeated then Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner in a free throw shooting contest during Halftime of the BGSU-Toledo Men's Basketball game). ROLL ALONG Mayor Quinn!
Following a road game vs. Michigan in Ann Arbor this weekend, Falcon Football returns home to begin MAC play vs. Buffalo on Saturday, October 2 for Homecoming 2010. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm at Doyt Perry Stadium. Festivities include:
