Akron, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team let opportunities slip through its grip early and the Akron Zips came away with a 27-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory in the conference opener for both teams Friday evening.
The first set was tied at 24-24 and 25-25 but Akron came up with clutch points down the stretch for the victory. The second set was tied at 23-23, but again the Falcons were unable to take advantage.
Bowling Green actually scored a handful of key points to push the first set to extra play. The Falcons were staring at three consecutive Akron set points with the score 24-21 but the Zips had a service error and Noelle Spitler and Paige Penrod came up with back-to-back kills to tie it up. Trailing 25-24, Bowling Green again got a clutch kill from Penrod to tie the score. But kills by Akron's Chelsea Harvey and Courtney Jarvis helped the Zips get a 27-25 win.
The Falcon again fought from behind in the second set, battling back from a 22-17 defict. Penrod and Kari Galen started the comeback with a block, followed by a Danielle Tonyan kill. At 23-19, the Falcons got a Susie Isphording kill, an Akron setting miscue, a block from Spitler and Tonyan, and an Ashley Dunn service ace to tie the score at 23-23. But Jarvis got another kill and an attack error by the Falcons gave Akron the 25-23 win.
Bowling Green was unable to make things competitive in the third set after losing those first two hard-fought sets.
Akron hit .301 for the match but had only three more kills than Bowling Green. The Falcons, though, had 20 attack errors and Akron had just 10. As well, Akron had two more service aces but Bowling Green evened that out with two extra blocks.
Penrod led the Orange and Brown with nine kills, while Spitler and Galen added eight each. Penrod also had a team-high 15 digs and Dunn had 12 digs and three aces.
Akron improves to 9-4 on the season and 1-0 in MAC play as Bowling Green falls to 5-10 and 0-1 in conference. The Falcons will play at Buffalo Saturday at 5 p.m. looking to move to .500 in league action.
