Chiricosta, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio (Avon Lake H.S.), won a singles flight title last weekend, as the Falcons opened the 2010-11 season by hosting the BGSU Invitational. She had a 5-1 overall record on the weekend, competing at the number-one flight in both singles and doubles.
Chiricosta posted a three-set victory over Toledo's Polina Guimaraes in the first round, losing only three total games in the final two sets of that comeback win. She then swept Amy Recht of IPFW and Margarita Sadovnikoa of Youngstown State, losing just eight games over four sets, en route to the title.
In doubles, Chiricosta teamed with sophomore Maddy Eccleston to advance to the championship match of the top flight.
In her collegiate career, Chiricosta posted a singles record of 11-1 in four years of the BGSU Invitational, winning three singles flight titles.
With her five overall wins last weekend, Chiricosta has moved into the top 10 on BGSU's career victory list. The senior has 133 combined victories, ranking her 10th all time. She now has totals of 67 singles wins and 66 doubles victories, ranking 14th on the career singles wins list and tying her for 11th on the doubles chart. She is within striking distance of the school records in all three categories.
In the classroom, Chiricosta has a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as an adolescent/young adult/secondary education major. The first student-athlete in BGSU women's tennis history to be named an ESPN Academic All-American, she has earned that honor in each of the last two seasons.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week honor is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and must have performed well during the prior week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons are in East Lansing, Mich., for this weekend's Spartan Invitational. That event runs from Friday (Sept. 24) through Sunday (Sept. 26) at multiple venues on and near the Michigan State campus.
