Gainesville, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Florida Gators continued their impressive start to the 2010 season, defeating Bowling Green 25-12, 25-11, 25-16 Friday night at the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational.
A week ago, Florida started the year by defeating then-No. 9 Iowa State and then-No. 2 Nebraska to climb to No. 6 in the country and make the biggest statement of the early-going in the 2010 season. The Gators continue to be unblemished after sweeping the Falcons in three sets.
Bowling Green actually hung tough in the early going of all three sets, taking a 4-2 lead in the first, holding an 8-7 lead in the second, and pulling tied at 9-9 in the third. But Florida went on extended runs in each of the frames to pull away.
Sam Fish started the match with a service ace and Paige Penrod followed with a kill. Florida then had an attack error and suddenly Bowling Green led 3-0. But the Gators later scored five in a row to take a 7-4 lead and added a pair of four-point runs later to pull away.
Bowling Green took an 8-7 lead in the second before Florida scored four straight and never looked back. After a Sam Fish kill made it 11-9, the Gators scored eight straight and won the second set.
In the third, BGSU battled back from a three-point deficit and back-to-back kills by Lindsey Butterfield and Danielle Tonyan tied the score at 9-9. The Falcons, however, were unable to take the lead and Florida used a 5-0 spurt later in the set to put the match away.
For the match, Florida hit .431 and had just six attack errors. Bowling Green, on the other hand, hit -.012 as the Gators had 12.0 team blocks. Penrod led the way for the Falcons with eight kills, while Noelle Spitler added five kills and three blocks.
Florida improves to 4-0 on the year and Bowling Green falls to 1-4. The Falcons will complete weekend play Saturday against Albany at 1 p.m.
