Scouting the Falcons
The Falcons are led by second year head coach Dave Clawson, who is 7-7 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference. Clawson is 65-56 in ten-plus years as a head coach, including five years at Fordham and four at Richmond.
Offensively the Falcons have a new signal caller under center by the name of Matt Schilz. In his first career start the Arcadia, Calif., native completed 22-of-43 passes for 221 yards and one touchdown.
When Schilz was distributing the ball his main target versus Troy was junior Kamar Jorden. Jorden, who red-shirted last season after spending two years at Hudson Valley Community College, caught a game-high nine passes for 111 yards in his first career start.
Senior running back Willie Geter continued his strong play in 2010, recording 93 yards on 20 carries and a score versus Troy. Geter now has 303 yards (on 50 carries) in his last three games, dating back to 2009.
Defensively, the Falcons opened 2010 with seven new starters on defense, led by Dwayne Woods (14 tackles), Jovan Leacock (11 tackles) and Champ Fells (10 tackles), all who made their first career start last week at Troy.
Falcons Fall at Troy 30-27
University of Troy kicker Michael Taylor hit a 34-yard field goal with four seconds remaining as the Trojans came from behind to defeat Bowling Green 30-27 in the 2010 football season opener for both teams.
With the scored knotted at 27 and under two minutes to go the Falcons were driving until redshirt freshman Matt Schilz' pass intended for Calvin Wiley skipped off his hands and into the arms of Troy's Tony Davis with 1:07 left. The Trojans marched 49 yards in 1:03 to get into position for the game-winner.
Schilz managed the game well in his first career start as BGSU's quarterback, going 22-for-43 for 221 yards and only the one interception. Kamar Jorden, also playing his first game in a BG uniform, had nine catches for 111 yards. Geter carried the ball 20 times for 93 yards. Tyrone Pronty had four catches for 58 yards and was explosive in the return game, averaging 30.2 yards on five kick returns, including a 48-yarder.
Falcon Firsts
In the contest with Troy a lot of firsts happen for several Falcons. Below are just a few of them.
• Seven Falcons made their first career start: Matt Schilz, Kamar Jorden, Calvin Wiley, Champ Fells, Jovan Leacock, Calvin Marshall and Dwayne Woods.
• Jorden and Wiley, along with redshirt freshmen Alex Bayer and Jordan Hopgood all came away with their first career catch.
• Schilz connected with Adrian Hodges for his first career touchdown pass.
• Bryan Wright made his first two field goals as a Falcon.
• Woods and Leacock had their first double-digit tackle performance, finishing with 14 and 11 tackles versus Troy.
• Fells recorded his first career interception.
• Junior Eugene Copper, in his first career punt return as a Falcon, went 63 yards for a touchdown.
Tulsa Scout
Tulsa is coming off a heart-breaking loss to East Carolina (51-49), by the hands of a 33-yard touchdown pass on the game's final play.
Tulsa's G.J. Kinne was 28-of-43 for 399 yards and five touchdowns, while completing passes to 10 different receivers. Tulsa added 180 yards on the ground, led by Damarius Johnson, who had 56 yards and a score versus ECU.
Defensively the Golden Hurricane gave up 538 yards of offense, including 383 through the air.
Tulsa 63, BGSU 7
The last time these two teams got together was at the 2008 GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., where Tulsa downed the Falcons 63-7. In that contest Tulsa put up 562 yards compared to the Falcons' 229. BGSU's lone score was a 78 yard kickoff return by Roger Williams.
That was the final game of the 2007 season for both teams, but BGSU still has a handful of guys that played in that game that still remain with BGSU now.
Angelo Magnone is the lone starter returning from that team, but Calvin Marshall, Willie Geter, Tyler Donahue, Neal Dahlman, Nick Torresso, Tyrone Pronty and Nick Rieke all saw action versus Tulsa at the end of the 2007 season.
Versus C-USA
The Falcons have not beaten a Conference USA opponent since the 2004 GMAC Bowl where BGSU upended Memphis 52-35. (0-2 since with losses to Tulsa, 63-7, and Marshall, 17-10.)
Morgan Named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week
Junior Keith Morgan, a member of the BGSU football team was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office.
Morgan was second on the team with a career-high 11 tackles versus the Trojans. The Bellefontaine, Ohio, native also added his second career interception on the first play of the second quarter.
This is the second time in Morgan's career he was honored by the conference office. Last season Morgan returned an on-side kick versus Akron for a touchdown, earning MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Cooper Named CFPA Punt Returner Honorable Mention
In his first career punt return as a Falcon junior Eugene Cooper went 63 yards for a touchdown to spot the Falcons a 24-17 lead early in the third quarter versus Troy. Cooper added a nine-yard return later in the game, finishing with two returns for 72 yards (36.0 avg.).
For his efforts, Cooper was named punt returner honorable mention by the College Football Performance Award on Monday morning (Sept. 6).
It was the first Falcon punt return for a touchdown since Corey Partridge went 79 yards for a score versus Temple on Oct. 1, 2005.
Much Too Young
The Falcons enter 2010 with 44 of their 85 scholarship players being either true or redshirt freshmen. Combine that with five players that played as true freshmen last year, the Falcons have a total of 49 players (57.6 percent) that have one year or less in playing experience.
Meet Matt Schilz
From 2000-03 Josh Harris threw for 7,503 yards and was followed by Omar Jacobs and his 6,938 yards from 2004-05 and Tyler Sheehan was next, throwing for 10,117 yards from 2006-09. What is in store for the newest Falcon quarterback, Matt Schilz?
In his first career start the redshirt freshman was 22-of-43 for 221 yards and a touchdown. His most impressive drive came on BG's second series of the game. Schilz completed a 19-yard strike to Kamar Jorden (on 3rd and 17) and followed that up with an 18-yard completion to Tyrone Pronty (on 3rd and 15) to help the Falcons take an early 7-0 lead on Troy.
The redshirt freshman is a 2009 graduate of Maranatha High School out of Arcadia, Calif., As a high school senior he threw for 3,200 yards and 31 touchdowns earning first-team all-league honors. According to www.rivals.com, Schilz was ranked as the fifth highest quarterback to sign a national letter of intent to a non-BCS school.
Other Falcons' First Career Starts
Josh Harris vs. Ohio (11/10/01).....13-of-21 for 156 yards and 1 TD/148 rushing yards
Omar Jacobs vs. Oklahoma (9/4/04).....24-of-41 for 218 yards and 2 TDs
Tyler Sheehan vs. Minnesota (9/1/07).....34-of-51 for 388 yards and 2 TDs
Little Giant
While Willie Geter may be one of the smallest guys on the team (5-7, 176), he continues his march up the record books. Geter enters 2010 playing some of his best football, rushing for 116 yards (on 16 carries) and three touchdowns versus Toledo and adding 92 yards (on 14 carries) and two touchdowns versus Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl. This past weekend he ran for 93 yards (20 carries) and a score versus Troy. For his career the Miami, Fla., native has averaged 4.9 yards a carry, ninth-best in school history.

A 1,827 Day Investment
Wide receiver Calvin Wiley invested a lot of time at BGSU before gathering in his first career catch. You see, Wiley is a sixth-year senior for the Orange and Brown. After redshirting in 2005, the Detroit, Mich., native suffered injury after injury from 2006-09. Wiley was granted a sixth-year of eligibility this past spring and took full advantage of the opportunity.
Prior to Troy the last time Wiley saw game action was on Nov. 21, 2006, but did not record a catch all season.
When it is all said and done Wiley first took the field on Sept. 2, 2006 and did not record his first reception until Sept. 4, 2010, a span of 1,827 days.
Old School
While Calvin Wiley is clearly the “old guy” on campus, many of his wide receiver teammates have been around for a while as well. When the Falcons line up for their first offensive play versus Tulsa it is expected to see sixth-year Wiley, joined by fifth-year wideout Tyrone Pronty and redshirt junior Kamar Jorden. The fourth Falcon wide receiver is expected to be redshirt junior Adrian Hodges and you can't forget about fifth-year tight end Nick Rieke.
Take Me To Your National Leader
BGSU senior wide receiver Tyrone Pronty ranks seventh in the nation with 224 all purpose yards after one week of action. Pronty posted 151 kick return yards (on five attempts), including a 48-yarder, which was one yard farther than any kick return BGSU had last season.
The wideout added 58 yards on four catches and had one rush for 15 yards versus Troy.

5. Daniel Thomas, Kansas St., 249.00

New Side of the Trench
Senior Nick Torresso spent 2007-09 as a defensive tackle for the Orange and Brown, but in 2010 the Chicago, Ill., native will be starting on the other side of the ball. Torresso is currently listed as a starting guard for the Orange and Brown.
In three years on the defensive side of the ball, Torresso recorded 38 tackles, making three starts.
Rimington Watch List
Bowling Green State University's Ben Bojicic was named to the Rimington Award Watch List, announced on Aug. 26. The award is given to the nation's top center.
In all, there are 37 players on the Watch List, including three from the Mid-American Conference. Bojicic, along with Kent State's Chris Anzevino and Central Michigan's Colin Miller are the lone representatives from the MAC.
The junior from Farmington Hills, Mich., is one of four captains on this year's Falcon squad.
The winner will be honored at Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 15, 2011.
Follow the Leader
Ben Bojicic, Eugene Fells, Willie Geter and Calvin Wiley will serve as captains for 2010.
Voice of “Champ”ions
The Bowling Green athletic department released its 2010 television commercial on Aug. 1, 2010. The 30 second spot features Falcons working out as they get ready for the season, but the special part of the commercial is that BGSU's Eugene “Champ” Fells does the voice-over for the commercial.
Wright Place, Wright Time
BGSU's kicker/punter Brian Wright is expected to handle most, if not all, of the kicking duties for the Orange and Brown this season. What wasn't expected was how he got here.
Wright spent the past three seasons as the kickoff specialist for the Michigan Wolverines. Wright graduated early and wanted to enroll into a graduate school, but Michigan did not offer the correct major.
Bowling Green did have this major (hospitality management), which allowed Wright to enroll in graduate school at BGSU and at the same time gave him the opportunity to play for the Falcons without sitting out a year.
30+ League
Since 2002 the Falcons are 51-6 when scoring at least 30 points and just 9-34 when scoring 29 or fewer. BGSU was 7-2 under Clawson last season when scoring 30-plus points.
