Bowling Green, Ohio - On a night in which longtime fan Bill Frack announced a $10 million endowment to the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, the Falcons almost stole the show by raining three-pointers and hammering dunks in a 73-61 win over Ohio Wednesday night in Anderson Arena.
The Falcons battered Ohio with seven thunderous dunks, jumping out to an early lead and never trailing in the second half. Torian Oglesby, who administered four of the slams, including an alley-oop on a halfcourt pass from Jordon Crawford, posted his first career double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Scott Thomas added three three-pointers and a dunk to finish with a game-high 19 points and added nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. A'uston Calhoun had an impressive alley-oop dunk of his own and ended with 15 points. Luke Kraus made all three of his three-point attempts and scored 12 points in the victory.
Bowling Green limited Ohio's offense by containing D.J. Cooper. One of the most dynamic players in the MAC, Cooper finished with 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists, below his season averages of 18.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.1 assists. The Bobcats entered the game first in the MAC in scoring but was held almost 14 points below their season average.
BGSU coach Louis Orr switched up his starting lineup after seeing the Falcons get off to slow starts lately. By inserting high-energy players Oglesby and Kraus into the lineup, Orr saw his team score the first four points and build a 15-8 lead in the first six minutes.
Ohio took its only lead of the game on an Ivo Baltic three-point play with 9:59 left and the Bobcats tied the score at 20-20 on a Nick Kellogg three-pointer with 7:41 left. But Thomas answered with a three and a jumper, followed by an Oglesby lay-up that helped the Falcons take a 34-29 lead into the break.
Bowling Green opened the second half on fire as Kraus hit a pair of three-pointers for a 44-33 lead but Ohio chipped away and eventually got within one point at 56-55 with 7:51 to go. The Bobcats had two opportunities to take the lead but turned the ball over both times and the Falcons scored six in a row to put the game away.
Calhoun scored on a jumper, followed by Oglesby's resounding alley-oop from Crawford at midcourt and another Oglesby dunk. During that stretch, Ohio had three turnovers and missed a pair of three-pointers. Down the stretch, the Falcons made their final six shots and went 5-of-5 at the free-throw line.
For the game, Bowling Green shot 51 percent from the field and made 7-of-14 three-pointers as well as 12-of-15 free-throws. The Falcons held a 29-25 rebounding edge and forced 17 turnovers, four more than they committed. Bowling Green had a 32-22 advantage in the paint and a 20-11 edge in points off of turnovers.
Ohio falls to 8-10 on the year and 1-3 in MAC play. Bowling Green improves to 8-10 overall and 3-1 in conference action. The Falcons, who are 7-2 in their last nine games, will head on the road to play at Akron Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in a game broadcast on Sports Time Ohio.
