Falcons, Chippewas put 4-1 MAC records on the line in Throwback Game at Anderson Arena
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, after wrapping up the first intra-divisional phase of the Mid-American Conference schedule with a 4-1 league record, now ventures into cross-divisional play ... the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller will begin a two-game homestand with Saturday's (Jan. 22) contest vs. Central Michigan University ... tipoff is scheduled for 12:07 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena (3,500) ... THE PROCHASKA WATCH
Senior Lauren Prochaska is moving ever closer to the BGSU career scoring record ... with 30 points in Tuesday's (Jan. 18) 72-61 win at Buffalo, Prochaska now has a career total of 2,065 points at BGSU ... she currently resides in second place on the school's career scoring list, and is 57 points shy of matching the school record ... that record is held by Jackie Motycka (2,122 points from 1985-89) ... Prochaska is averaging 17.2 points per game, the second-highest average in BG annals, in her storied Falcon career.
PROCHASKA MOVING UP ON MAC LIST AS WELL
BGSU senior Lauren Prochaska recently joined a very exclusive club ... with her basket just over eight minutes into the win over Akron (Jan. 12), the native of Plain City, Ohio surpassed the 2,000-point mark for her career ... Prochaska became just the second player in school history, and only the 10th in MAC annals, to reach that milestone ... in Tuesday's Buffalo game, Prochaska moved past former Western Michigan standout Casey Rost into eighth place on the MAC list ... she is just one point behind seventh-place Tracey Lynn (Kent State), and needs 26 points to match Tamara Bowie (Ball State) for sixth place ... the MAC list can be found in the PDF version of these notes, just a click away at the top of this page.
2 SCORES 20 AGAIN (OR IN THIS CASE, 30)
Senior Lauren Prochaska scored a game-high 30 points in the win at Buffalo Tuesday (Jan. 18) ... Prochaska has scored 20 or more points in a game 11 times this season and 44 times in her BGSU career ... she has hit the 30-point plateau twice this year (31 points vs. Vanderbilt) and five times as a Falcon.
HOME COOKIN'
BGSU has enjoyed a great deal of success at home this year to date ... the Falcons are 9-0 at Anderson Arena this season, and BGSU has won those nine games by an average of nearly 30 points (29, to be exact) ... the Falcons are averaging 85.0 points per game at home, having scored at least 79 points in all nine games ... BG is allowing just 56.0 ppg at "The House That Roars" this season to date.
WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE (THAT ROARS)
The Falcons will put some impressive streaks on the line in the Central Michigan game ... BGSU has won 38 consecutive regular-season home games at "The House That Roars" ... the Falcons' last regular-season loss at Anderson Arena came vs. Western Michigan nearly three years ago; on Jan. 30, 2008 ... a few more Anderson-related notes ...
• Overall, BGSU has won 22 home games in a row, and 41 of the last 42 ... the lone loss in that stretch came to Indiana in the third round of the 2009 WNIT ... BG had won 19-straight home games before losing to IU, then beginning the current 22-game streak ... 36 of the Falcons' 41 wins in that span have come by double digits.
• The current 22-game home winning streak is the sixth longest in the nation.
• BGSU is 9-0 at Anderson Arena this year to date ... in 2009-10, the Falcons posted a 13-0 home regular-season record for the second consecutive year ... BGSU has gone undefeated at home in the regular season seven times in program history ... in three of those years, including in 2008-09, the Falcons' lone blemish was a home loss suffered in national tournament play.
THROWBACK GAME
Saturday's game vs. Central Michigan will feature a number of promotions ... in honor of the final year of Anderson Arena, the Falcons are holding a throwback game ... BGSU will wear retro uniforms, and the game will feature $1 general admission tickets and special concession pricing ... the Falcons' jerseys for the throwback game are modeled after those from the mid-1980s, and the players will wear their hair in popular 1980s styles (just kidding about that last part) ... the jerseys will be auctioned off at the BiG event on Saturday, March 5.
THAT'S A FIRST (THIS YEAR, AT LEAST)
Something happened in Tuesday's (Jan. 18) game at Buffalo that had not taken place all season ... for the first time in 18 games this year, the Falcons committed more turnovers than the opponent ... BGSU turned the ball over 17 times, compared to 14 for the Bulls ... the last time BG had more turnovers than the opposition was in last season's final game, against Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Championships (March 20, 2010) ... the 2010-11 squad still ranks among the national leaders in fewest turnovers per game.
HOLDING ON TO THE BALL
• The Falcons have been successful at limiting turnovers this season ... as of the last NCAA rankings (Monday, Jan. 17), BGSU was eighth in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (13.8) ... that average is now at 14.0 entering the Central Michigan game ... BGSU has committed more turnovers than the opponent in only one of this season's 18 games to date.
• BG and Evansville each coughed the ball up 19 times in the season opener ... then, however, BGSU committed 15 or fewer turnovers in 14 of the next 15 games, before turning the ball over 19 times at Kent State and 17 at UB.
• During the 15-game win streak, the Falcons forced the opponent into an average of 18.8 turnovers per contest ... overall, BG has forced 15 or more opponent turnovers in 16 of this year's 18 games, including 19 or more in 11 of those contests (see game-by-game list at right).
• BGSU enjoyed a 77-12 advantage in points off turnovers in last week's two-game homestand ... the Falcons had a whopping 40-3 advantage in points off turnovers in the win over Miami, then had 37 points off turnovers to Akron's nine ... BGSU's +37 margin in the points-off-turnovers category in the MU game was the team's highest since at least the 2001-02 season (records for the specialty categories are incomplete prior to '02-03).
PONTIUS MOVING UP BGSU SCORING LIST
As mentioned earlier in this long, rambling game-notes packet, Falcon senior Lauren Prochaska has surpassed the 2,000-point mark for her career ... classmate Tracy Pontius, like Prochaska, resides in the BGSU top-20 in career points ... with her first basket this season (in the opener at Evansville on Nov. 12), Pontius surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career ... Pontius became the 24th player to reach the milestone ... heading into the CMU game, Pontius has a total of 1,221 points as a Falcon ... over 1,000 of those points have come since the start of her sophomore season ... Pontius currently sits in 17th place on the BGSU scoring list, having passed Jacki Raterman (1,213 points) in the Kent State game ... for Pontius, her next target on that list is 16th-place Melissa Chase (1,223 pts. from 1979-83), with 15th-place Michelle Shade (1,233 pts. from 1991-95) also in her sights.
TREY BIEN! PROCHASKA, PONTIUS AMONG BGSU'S TOP THREE
A pair of BGSU seniors sit high atop the school's three-point field-goal list ... Lauren Prochaska is the most prolific long-range shooter in school history, and Tracy Pontius has moved into the top three ... entering the CMU game, Prochaska has a total of 290 three-point field goals made ... she broke the BGSU record set by Liz Honegger (216 triples from 2003-07) last season ... Pontius now has 200 career threes, ranking third at BGSU ... she is just the 18th player in MAC history to reach the milestone ... Prochaska ranks second on the conference career list, and has a shot at breaking the MAC career record of 323 three-pointers made, set by Ball State's Audrey McDonald.
SPEAKING OF THAT RECORD ...
As mentioned (about five seconds ago), senior Lauren Prochaska has an outside chance (no pun intended) to break the Mid-American Conference record for three-point field goals made in a career ... Prochaska hit four triples in the Buffalo game, giving her a total of 290 in her career, good for second place on the MAC list ... that list can be found in the PDF version of these notes.
THREE-MENDOUS! MANY FALCONS CONNECTING FROM DOWNTOWN
Seniors Lauren Prochaska and Tracy Pontius are certainly not the only Falcons with the capability to score from beyond the arc ... no fewer than 12 different players have hit at least one three-point field goal this season ... and, two of the three players on the active roster who have not made a triple – senior Chelsea Albert and freshman Jill Stein – have not attempted one.
ABOUT THE FALCONS

• Steffen, Hennegan and Uhl rank third through fifth on the team in scoring, and all three have scored between 147 and 166 points this season ... Steffen has 9.2 ppg and has hit 27 three-pointers this year to date ... she leads the Falcons in steals, with 1.9 per game (Steffen has 34 steals, Prochaska 32 and Pontius 31 this year) ... • Hennegan, a co-captain along with Prochaska, played in all 34 games last season ... post players Chelsea Albert and Kelly Zuercher round out the senior class ... Zuercher played in 30 games off the bench last winter, while Albert appeared in 28 contests.
• The Falcons' lone junior is Jessica Slagle, who played in every game last year ... BG has a pair of redshirt sophomores in Maribeth Giese and Danielle Havel ... Giese played in two games early last season before suffering an injury and sitting out the rest of the season as a redshirt ... Havel sat out the entire campaign after transferring from DePaul University.
• The roster includes three true sophomores in Simone Eli, Allison Papenfuss and Steffen ... four newcomers join the program in 2010-11 ... that list includes a pair of guards in Jillian Halfhill and Noelle Yoder, along with post player Jill Stein ... additionally, Alexis Rogers has joined the program, but will sit out this season after transferring from Duke University ... she will retain three seasons of eligibility.

CENTURY (AND A HALF) MARK
Saturday's Central Michigan game will be the 150th Mid-American Conference game in the head-coaching tenure of BGSU's Curt Miller ... Miller, in his 10th season in Northwest Ohio, has a record of 112-37 (75.2%) in MAC regular-season games ... after going a combined 11-21 in conference games in his first two seasons, Miller's teams have gone 101-16 (86.3%) in MAC regular-season play since the start of the 2003-04 season.
A QUICK LOOK AT CMU
Central Michigan will enter Saturday's game with an overall record of 12-5, and the Chippewas are 4-1 in MAC action ... CMU is tied for first place in the MAC's West Division after a 78-74 win over Toledo on Wednesday night (Jan. 19) ... CMU and UT are now tied for the divisional lead ... through the first round of intra-divisional play, Central's only league loss came at Ball State, 86-77, last weekend (Jan. 15) ... the Chippewas are 4-1 at home, 3-3 on the road and 5-1 in neutral-site games this year to date ... Guevara, in her fourth season with the Chippewas, welcomed back six letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's club ... the 2009-10 team went 12-18 overall and 8-8 in MAC play ... the school's athletics web site is www.cmuchippewas.com.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Central Michigan, 42-13, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Chippewas won the most recent meeting ... CMU broke a nine-game BGSU series winning streak with a 67-65 win in Mount Pleasant in last season's lone meeting (Feb. 10, 2010) ... in the last meeting between the teams at Anderson Arena, the Falcons won a 94-79 decision, behind a school-record 43-point performance by Lauren Prochaska, two years ago (Feb. 15, 2009) ... BGSU is 22-4 all-time in home games vs. the Chippewas, and the Falcons have won 11-straight games vs. Central Michigan at Anderson ... CMU's last win at "The House That Roars" was a 60-58 decision on Feb. 8, 1995 ... Curt Miller has a record of 10-3 against Central Michigan in his stellar BGSU career.
MEMORABLE MEETINGS
Each of the last two regular-season meetings between BGSU and Central Michigan have been memorable, to say the least ...
• Two years ago, in the teams' last matchup inside venerable Anderson Arena, then-sophomore Lauren Prochaska scored a school-record 43 points in the Falcons' 94-79 win (Feb. 15, 2009) ... Prochaska's total fell just one point shy of the MAC single-game record, and set a new record for most points in a conference game ... that win also enabled BGSU to clinch the MAC'S East Division title.
• Last season (Feb. 10, 2010), a furious CMU comeback gave the Chippewas a 67-65 win at the Rose Center ... Central had trailed by 16 points in the second half before rallying for the victory ... Kaihla Szunko had a monster game for the hosts, with 21 points and 18 rebounds ... following that loss, the Falcons would win the next eight games, including three in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland ... BG would not lose again until the first round of the NCAA Championships.
LAST TIME OUT
Senior Lauren Prochaska scored 30 points to lead the Falcons to a 72-61 road win over Buffalo Tuesday night (Jan. 18) ... Prochaska hit four three-point field goals and went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line on the night ... she had 17 points in the first half, including 10 in the final seven-plus minutes as the Falcons went on a 21-4 run to end the period ... BGSU took a 38-29 lead into the intermission, and the Brown and Orange never trailed in the second half ... sophomore Chrissy Steffen had 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds for the Falcons ... Kourtney Brown had 14 points to lead four UB players in double digits, and also had a game-high 15 rebounds ... the Bulls led by an 18-8 score with just under eight minutes gone, before the Falcons rallied with a quick 7-0 run ... back came the hosts, however, with five points in a 20-second span ... a basket by Brittany Hedderson was followed by Jessica Fortman's three-pointer, giving UB a 23-15 lead with 9:09 left in the period ... the teams traded hoops before BG began that 21-4 run ... junior Jessica Slagle found senior Jen Uhl for back-to-back baskets ... Steffen hit a trey, and Prochaska's free throws gave the Falcons a 26-25 lead ... UB answered with a jumper, but Prochaska scored six points in six seconds to give BG the lead for good ... she banked home a three-point try, and after the Bulls immediately turned the ball over, Prochaska hit another triple try for a 32-27 lead ... BG then would score the final six points of the half.
SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
BGSU will put a somewhat-impressive statistic on the line when the Falcons face Central Michigan's high-scoring offense on Saturday ... BG has not allowed an opposing player to score 20 points in any of this year's 18 games to date ... in fact, no Falcon opponent has gone over the 20-point mark in 22 games, since Miami's Courtney Osborn had 23 points in the 2009-10 regular-season finale (March 2, 2010) ... the last opposing player to score 20 points inside Anderson Arena was Eastern Michigan's Tavelyn James, who had 22 points last Jan. 23 in BG's 83-71 win.
THE FALCONS ARE/WERE ...
• 16-2 this season to date; after going 27-7 last season;
• 4-1 in MAC play this season; after going 14-2 last winter, in the process winning a sixth-straight league regular-season title;
• 222-82 since Curt Miller took the BGSU helm in May of 2001;
• 112-37 in MAC games in that time:
• 213-63 overall in the eight years (plus 18 games) since Miller's assistant coaches have all been in place (associate head coach Jennifer Roos and assistant coach Brandi Poole have been on Miller's staff since his first year; assistant Kevin Eckert joined the staff one year later);
• 201-47 over the last seven-plus years, with 2009-10 marking BG's seventh-straight season of at least 20 wins;
• a staggering 180-37 in the past six-plus years, with no fewer than 23 wins and a MAC regular-season title in each of the last six seasons;
• an eye-popping 157-29 overall, and 77-8 in the MAC regular season, in the last five-plus years, with at least 26 wins each year;
• a/an (insert your own adjective here) 129-26 in the last four-plus years, including a 61-8 conference ledger;
• 98-22 overall, and 46-7 in MAC regular-season games, since seniors Chelsea Albert, Tracy Pontius, Lauren Prochaska, Jen Uhl and Kelly Zuercher began their respective playing careers at BGSU;
• 72-14 overall and 33-4 in MAC action since junior Jessica Slagle and redshirt soph Maribeth Giese ventured to NW Ohio;
• 43-9 overall and 18-3 in the MAC in the BGSU playing careers of senior Maggie Hennegan and sophomores Simone Eli, Allison Papenfuss and Chrissy Steffen (2009-10 was Hennegan's first playing season at BGSU, after she sat out the prior year as a transfer from Saint Louis Univ.);
• 95-10 in the last 105 games vs. MAC opponents (regular-season and tournament);
• A perfect 52-0 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field in the Miller Era;
• 183-10 when having a better FG pct. than the opposition in Miller's tenure, including a 55-0 mark in the last two-plus seasons;
• 169-27 when making more free throws during Miller's first nine-plus years;
• 132-12 when outrebounding the opponent in the Miller Era;
• 46-4 in MAC home games in the last six-plus seasons, including three 8-0 marks; and
• 38-5 in MAC road games over the last five-plus years (with the losses coming in 2007-08 at Ball State, '08-09 at Miami, last year at Toledo and CMU, and last weekend at Kent State).
FIRST PHASE OF 'SECOND SEASON' DONE: THE FALCONS VS. THE MAC
The Falcons, along with the rest of the Mid-American Conference teams, enter the cross-divisional phase of the league schedule ... BGSU enters the CMU game with an all-time record of 339-143 (.703) in MAC regular-season contests, the most wins and highest winning pct. of all league institutions ... and, BGSU leads the series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league, obviously, with a winning series record against every other school.
THE MAC SCHEDULE
• The 2010-11 season is the sixth utilizing the current MAC scheduling format for women's basketball ... each of the 12 schools opens conference action with five intra-divisional games, followed by six cross-divisional games and five more intra-divisional contests to close the regular season ... so, BGSU plays five games vs. East Division schools to begin and end the MAC season, with six games vs. the West Division teams in the middle of the league schedule.
• Over the first five years of that scheduling format, the Falcons have finished the first swing through the East Division with a perfect 5-0 record four times, and BGSU has gone 4-1 on two occasions (2007-08 and this season) ... so, the Falcons are a combined 28-2 against East Division foes during the first round-robin phase of the season in the last six years.
70 IS A MAGIC NUMBER
BGSU has scored 70 or more points in 13 of the season's first 18 games, and the Falcons have posted a perfect 13-0 mark in those contests ... at the other end of the court, the Falcons have held 17 of the 18 foes under 70 points this year to date ... BG is 15-2 in those games ... last week (Jan. 12), Akron scored 72 points to become the first Falcon foe to surpass 70 points this year.
PONTIUS NOW SEVENTH ON BGSU ASSISTS LIST
Senior Tracy Pontius has moved into seventh place on the BGSU career assists list ... she passed Cathy Koch (347 assists from 1988-92) in the win at Buffalo ... Pontius now has 348 career assists at BG ... her next target on the school list is sixth-place Jaymee Wappes (387 from 1996-2000).
CLOSING THE DOORS OF THE HOUSE THAT ROARS
The 2010-11 season is the final year that BGSU's teams will call Anderson Arena home, and there are many events planned as part of the year-long celebration ... the All-Anderson teams for men's and women's basketball, announced in October, will be recognized at a home game ... for the BGSU women, the All-Anderson Team recognition is scheduled for the Feb. 5 game vs. Ball State ... the final women's home regular-season game inside "The House That Roars" will be March 2 vs. Buffalo ... on March 5, the festivities culminate with the B!G Event, a final farewell celebration at 8:00 p.m. ... this once-in-a-lifetime event will be attended by hundreds of Falcon faithful, as well as members of all three All-Anderson Teams, other former letterwinners, current players and coaching staff members ... for more information, contact the athletics department at 419-372-2401 or rlynv@bgsu.edu.
CAPTAINS
Seniors Maggie Hennegan and Lauren Prochaska are the captains of the 2010-11 Falcons ... Hennegan is a captain for the second consecutive year ... she was chosen as a captain before ever playing her first game as a Falcon.
UP NEXT
Following the Central Michigan game, the Falcons host arch-rival Toledo in Wednesday (Jan. 26) action at "The House That Roars" ... tipoff for that game is 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
