Bowling Green Collides With Rival Toledo on Friday
MEET RESULTS --- PHOTO GALLERY
The Cleveland State Vikings' ship ran aground on Wednesday night at Bowling Green State University's Cooper Pool, as the Falcons used a flurry of top finishes to win convincingly, 170-124.
On Senior Day at Cooper Pool, Bowling Green won nine of the evening's 14 swimming events. Of those, the team captured first and second place in four races, while they took the top three spots in two.
Even when the team failed to win an event, they still dominated. Of the five events won by a Viking, the Falcons secured second through fourth place three times and took both second and third place in a fourth race.
Leading the way for the Orange and Brown was sophomore Alexis Kain, who swept her signature events - the 100 and 200 breaststroke. In the 100 yard event, Kain's time of 1:04.48 won by nearly two seconds and defeated the closest CSU competitor by nearly five. Teammate Amanda Rom kept it close in the 200 yard event, finishing just one second shy of Kain's time (2:21.24). However, Kain beat CSU's Michelle Ferro by well over six seconds.
Falcon junior Vicky Yu raced in three individual events and won twice. Yu won a tight race in the 200 individual medley, as her 2:10.78 time won by less than a second. She split the two butterfly events. Yu won the 200 fly comfortably with a time of 2:05.14, while she fell by less than a second (57.42) in the 100 fly.
Yu and Kain each helped the team win the 200 medley relay, as the Falcons finished the 200 yards in 1:47.86.
Bowling Green's two seniors, Sarah Burston and Carrie Enright, were honored tonight as they competed in their final home meet as Falcons. Each had a successful meet.
Burston placed in the top four in each of her three individual races. She placed second in the 200 fly and third in the 100 fly, just behind Vicky Yu, and she took fourth in the 200 IM. Burston also helped her team earn a second place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Enright raced in the 200 freestyle relay, the last event of the night, and earned victory as the team finished in just 1:36.62. Enright also placed fourth in both of her individual events, the 100 fly (59.73) and the 50 freestyle (24.82).
Jennifer Beatty, a junior from Indiana, Pa., enjoyed a fantastic night, as well. Beatty won the 1000 freestyle by finishing in 10:37.51, and she took second place in both the 500 freestyle and the 200 backstroke.
Among the team's freshmen, Kristina Roop secured both a second-place (1000 free) and fourth-place (200 fly) finish. Meanwhile, Brittany Szekely took second and fourth in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, respectively. She also competed for both winning relay teams.
The Falcons now take all of this momentum and swim again in less than 48 hours. The team will travel to face That Team Up North (Toledo) on Friday evening (Jan. 28) at 5:00 p.m. in UT's Student Recreation Center.
Toledo will enter the meet 3-3 in dual meets. The Rockets and Falcons have one common opponent -- Ohio. Toledo defeated the Bobcats at home one week before Ohio won in Athens against the Falcons.
However, Toledo also competed in December's Eastern Michigan Invitational. At that meet, the Falcons placed fourth, three spots ahead of the seventh-place Rockets.
Last year, Bowling Green fell to eventual Mid-American Conference champion Toledo at Cooper Pool, 158-99.
Of the 16 events at Friday's meet, 13 will be the same as at tonight's meet. The only differences include the 1650 freestyle (instead of the 1000 free), the 400 IM (instead of the 200 IM), and the 400 medley relay (instead of the 200 medley relay).
This will be the final MAC dual meet for Bowling Green before the team participates in the conference championship meet at the end of February.
