In their final conference dual meet of the season, the Bowling Green State University swimming team faced defending Mid-American Conference champion and Interstate 75 rival Toledo on Friday night (Jan. 28).
Just 48 hours removed from a win over Cleveland State, the team could not muster what was needed to down the defending champs as Toledo rolled to a 195-80 victory.
The Falcons (3-3, 1-3 MAC) managed two wins -- one individual, one relay -- in 16 events. Bowling Green also tallied seven second-place and three third-place finishes against the Rockets (4-3, 2-0 MAC).
Sophomore Alexa Harris won the 100 backstroke by finishing in 58.36 seconds, defeating two Rocket swimmers by less than one-half second. In the 200 yard event, Harris finished as the runner-up, less than one second behind the winner.
Bowling Green's other victory came in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Brittany Szekely, Carrie Enright, Emily Bennet and Sarah Reinink combined for a time of 1:36.44 to help the team score 11 points. Reinink had the best split of all swimmers in the event, completing her 50 yards in just 23.73 seconds.
One of the Falcons' seven second-place finishes came in the evening's other relay, the 400 medley. Alexa Harris, Alexis Kain, Vicky Yu and Emily Bennet combined to finish in 3:55.34 and earn four points.
Kain and Yu each had two individual second-place finishes. Kain picked up both of hers in the breaststroke events, finishing the 100 in 1:04.33 and the 200 in 2:20.02. Yu earned second place in the 400 yard individual medley (4:37.73) and the 200 butterfly (2:05.27). In the latter event, Yu achieved the best 50-yard split, starting with a 28.13 mark over the first 50 yards.
Brittany Szekely earned the other top-two finish, completing the 50 yard freestyle in 24.41 seconds.
Kristina Roop (1650 freestyle), Sarah Reinink (50 freestyle) and Emily Bennet (100 freestyle) each earned third-place finishes.
Bowling Green swims next in one week, on Friday, Feb. 4, when they travel to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the Michigan State Spartans. That will be the final regular season meet for the Falcons, who will then prepare for the 2011 MAC Championships in Athens, Ohio, held from Feb. 23 to Feb. 26.
