BGSU posts 7-0 win over Vikings at the PTC Friday night
The Bowling Green State University tennis team opened the home portion of the dual-match schedule in style, rolling along to a 7-0 win over visiting Cleveland State University Friday night (Jan. 28). The non-conference dual match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-1 on the young season, while the Vikings drop to 1-2.
"We were really fired up to play tonight," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "I expected this to be a close match, but we were really ready to go."
Avon Lake natives Christine and Nikki Chiricosta helped propel the Falcons on to victory. Christine, a senior, teamed with sophomore Maddy Eccleston for an 8-4 win at the top doubles flight.
Nikki Chiricosta, a freshman, partnered with classmate Emily Reuland for an 8-4 victory at flight number two. The Brown and Orange completed the doubles sweep as sophomores Katie Grubb and Mary Hill came away with an 8-6 triumph at the third flight.
In singles action, BGSU swept all six matches, including four in straight sets. Christine Chiricosta dropped only five total matches at the top flight en route to a win over Catrine Bjerrehus.
With her two victories on Friday night, Christine Chiricosta has moved within striking distance of the BGSU record for combined career wins. Her success vs. CSU on Friday gives her a total of 151 victories as a Falcon, good for second place in BG history and just two wins shy of matching the school record.
Chiricosta, BGSU's lone senior, also moved into second place on the BGSU doubles wins list. She now has 75 doubles victories, nine away from matching the school record. She has 76 singles victories to move into a tie for fifth place on that list, and needs five singles wins to tie that BG mark.
Nikki Chiricosta lost only two total games in her third-flight sweep of Alex Power. Reuland and Eccleston each swept their respective Viking opponents on Friday night. Eccleston lost only three total games in her win over Alexandra Bush at the fifth flight.
Reuland won at the fourth flight, downing Nicole Janek by identical 6-3 scores.
Two Falcons rallied from deficits to win. Junior Jessica Easdale struggled in her first set against Mengdi Liu at the sixth flight, but posted a 6-1 victory in the second set and a 6-2 triumph in the third.
At the second flight, Hill dropped a close first set to Kara Sherwood, then picked up a 6-4 win in the second flight. With the overall match already determined, the two played a third-set mini-tiebreaker, with Hill earning a 10-5 result for the win.
BGSU is now a perfect 6-0 in the all-time series with the Vikings, including two 7-0 wins at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Two years ago (Jan. 23, 2009), the Falcons downed CSU in the first-ever dual match at the PTC.
This year's edition of the Falcons now head to Indianapolis, Ind., for a pair of matches as weekend action continues. BGSU will face IUPUI on Saturday night (Jan. 29), then will meet Butler in Sunday (Jan. 30) action.
