Falcons Win Three Titles at Fall MAC Invitational
October 01, 2011 | Women's Tennis
The Bowling Green State University tennis team capped off the Fall MAC Invitational by winning three flight championships, the most of any competing school. The two-day, six-team tourney, which featured six Mid-American Conference schools, wrapped up on Saturday (Oct. 1).
Sophomore Nikki Chiricosta won a pair of titles at the event, going a perfect 3-0 in both singles and doubles in Kalamazoo. Junior Mary Hill won a singles crown, while another junior, Maddy Eccleston, teamed up with Chiricosta to capture a doubles championship.
Team scores were not kept for the event, but BGSU competitors combined for a singles record of 15-5 and a doubles mark of 7-2 in the tourney, including 10-3 singles and 3-0 doubles marks on Saturday. One of the singles losses came to another BG player, as Chiricosta defeated Eccleston to capture the crown in Flight-B action.
In addition to the Falcons and host Western Michigan, other participating schools included Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Toledo.
Hill won the championship at Flight C, winning all three of her weekend singles matches in third-set tiebreakers. On Saturday, she lost the first set in both her semifinal match vs. Western Michigan's April Kerr and her championship contest against Toledo's Silvia Carvajal. But, in both cases, Hill rallied to win a narrow second set, then captured the third-set super-tiebreaker by a 10-7 score.
In doubles play, Chiricosta and Eccleston had captured the title with two Friday wins, but the tourney format was tweaked to ensure that each team played three matches on the weekend. The Falcon duo did not lose more than four games in any of their three victories on the weekend.
Sophomore Emily Reuland and junior Jade Johnson each went 2-1 on the weekend, bouncing back from a Friday loss to post a pair of wins on Saturday. Reuland, competing at the A flight, downed two Northern Illinois foes, both in straight sets. At Flight D, Johnson needed a tiebreaker to down WMU's Caroline Aleck, then topped Ball State's Kylee "No Relation" Johnson in straight sets in her third match of the weekend.
In Flight E, junior Katie Grubb went 2-0 on the weekend, defeating Eastern Michigan's Georgia De'Lisle-Tarr on Saturday. Flight E was the lone singles flight that did not feature bracketed play.
The doubles flight championships had been determined on Friday, but each of BGSU's three teams won a match on Saturday. The Falcons' doubles duos included Chiricosta and Eccleston at Flight B, Johnson and Reuland at Flight C and Grubb and Hill at Flight D.
Through two tournaments this season (the BGSU Invitational and the Fall MAC Invite), BGSU competitors have posted combined records of 33-8 in singles and 13-5 in doubles. Each of the seven student-athletes on the team has a winning percentage of .667 or better on the season.
The Falcons' next action comes in two weeks, as BGSU will make the short trip north to compete in Toledo's Rocket Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15.
