BGSU to make the short trip north for weekend tourney
The Bowling Green State University tennis team makes a short trip north this weekend, as the Falcons will compete in the Rocket Invitational in Toledo, Ohio. The two-day, four-team tournament, hosted by the University of Toledo, will be held this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 14-15) at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
Weather permitting, the invite will be held outdoors at Shadow Valley, which is located at 1661 S. Holland-Sylvania Road in Maumee. In the event of inclement weather, matches will be moved to Shadow Valley's indoor courts.
ROCKET INVITATIONAL SCHEDULE OF PLAY
DIRECTIONS TO SHADOW VALLEY
The University of Detroit Mercy and Duquesne University will join the Falcons and Rockets in the event. Matches are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
The invite will utilize a hidden dual format, as players will be grouped into A (flights 1 through 3) and B (flights 4 through 6) singles brackets. Throughout the course of the two-day tourney, BGSU will compete against each of the other three schools in both singles and doubles.
The Falcons are looking to build upon the team's success at the first two tournaments of the year. BGSU's seven players have combined to win over 80 percent of their singles matches this season to date, and the Falcons have won their doubles competitions at better than a 72-percent rate.
While dual-match scores will not be kept at the Rocket Invitational, a point system will be utilized. The team winning at least two of the three matches in any of the competitions will earn a point. BGSU's schedule is as follows...

Flight winners will be recognized at all six singles positions as well as all three doubles flights.
This weekend's invite will be the Falcons' third of the young season. BGSU has enjoyed great success at each of the first two tourneys. Two weekends ago, head coach Penny Dean's team won three flight championships, the most of any competing school, at the Fall MAC Invitational in Kalamazoo (Sept. 30-Oct. 1).
Sophomore Nikki Chiricosta won a pair of titles at that event, going a perfect 3-0 in both singles and doubles in Kalamazoo. Junior Mary Hill won a singles crown, while another junior, Maddy Eccleston, teamed up with Chiricosta to capture a doubles championship.
Chiricosta has won three titles in four chances this fall to date, with singles flight championships in each of her two tourneys, and one doubles flight crown.
Team scores were not kept at the Fall MAC Invite, but BGSU competitors combined for a singles record of 15-5 and a doubles mark of 7-2 in the tourney, including 10-3 singles and 3-0 doubles marks on Saturday. One of the singles losses came to another BG player, as Chiricosta defeated Eccleston to capture the crown in Flight-B action.
The opening weekend of the season saw the Falcons post a combined 27-6 record at the team's own BGSU Invitational (Sept. 16-17). Eccleston and fellow junior Katie Grubb won singles crowns at that tourney, as did Chiricosta and sophomore Emily Reuland. Additionally, Reuland teamed with senior Jessica Easdale for a doubles championship.
Through two tournaments this season, BGSU competitors have posted combined records of 33-8 in singles and 13-5 in doubles. Each of the seven student-athletes on the team has a winning percentage of .667 or better on the season.
The Falcons posted the highest point total of any of the teams at last year's Rocket Invitational to capture the five-team event (in addition to the four schools scheduled to participate in this year's tourney, Cleveland State was in last year's field). BG had nine points, followed by UT (8), CSU (4), Duquesne (3) and Detroit (0).
Following this Rocket Invitational, selected members of the 2011-12 Falcons will compete at the ITA Midwest Regional, which runs from Oct. 20-25 in Columbus, Ohio.
