
Eastern Michigan Sweeps Falcons

Bowling Green, Ohio – Despite a 54-50 edge in digs, the Bowling Green State University volleyball team lost to Eastern Michigan Saturday night 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 in the Stroh Center.
The Falcons held their own in most statistical categories, but Eastern Michigan hit with great efficiency to win in three sets. Bowling Green had four aces, just one less than the Eagles, and 37 kills, only four less than Eastern Michigan.
Bowling Green, though, had 18 attack errors compared to just seven for its opponent as Eastern Michigan hit .318. BGSU hit only .170, including .029 in the deciding third set.
The Falcons hit a strong .298 in the opening frame and led by as many as four points early. Bowling Green led 8-5 when Eastern Michigan scored seven straight but the Falcons came back with a 6-1 run to tie the score at 16-16 on a Danielle Tonyan kill. The match was still tied at 19-19 when the Eagles went on a 4-1 run to build a 23-20 lead. Emily Kauth and Kari Galen had back-to-back kills to get the Falcons back within one and force Eastern Michigan to use a timeout. The Eagles came out the break and went to leading hitter Rachel Iaquaniello, who had a pair of kills for the 25-22 win.
The second set went back-and-forth early until Eastern Michigan used an 8-3 spurt to build a 15-9 edge. The Falcons fought back with four straight points, capped by a Lindsey Butterfield solo block, to get within two. Eastern Michigan clung to a 16-14 lead but closed out the set strong for the 25-18 win.
Bowling Green scored the first two points of the third set but the Eagles scored four in a row and never trailed again, rolling to the 25-16 victory.
Tonyan led the team with 12 kills, including seven in the first set. Kauth added 10 kills and Laura Avila had a double-double with 23 assists and 11 digs. Ashley Dunn had a match-high 16 digs as the libero and she also had a match-high two aces.
Eastern Michigan improves to 17-6 with the win and 5-3 in Mid-American Conference play. Bowling Green falls to 16-5 overall and 3-5 in league play. The Falcons will play their final non-conference match of the year Tuesday at Oakland at 7 p.m.
