BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming team squared off on Friday (Oct. 28) against the defending Mid-American Conference champion Ohio University Bobcats at BGSU's Cooper Natatorium. Despite winning five of the first 12 swimming events, the Falcons ultimately suffered their first loss of the season, 168-121.
Senior Vicky Yu and junior Emily Bennet won two events, while Alexis Kain and Emily Waller added single event victories to lead the effort for the Orange and Brown.
Yu swept the butterfly events for the first time this season. She recorded BGSU's first event victory of the day in the 200 fly, and outpaced OU's Amanda Cecere by over four seconds by recording a time of 2:05.51. Yu's race against Cecere in the 100 fly was much closer. She finished in 0:58.58 and won by just one-tenth of a second.
Yu also finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.24).
Bennet won Friday's two sprints. She captured the 50-yard freestyle with a blazing time of 0:23.84, just four-tenths of a second ahead of Ohio's Abby Corcoran. She defeated Corcoran again in the 100 free. She capped a close race by finishing in 0:52.28.
In perhaps BGSU's best team showing of the meet, Kain and Amanda Rom each finished in the top three of both breaststroke events. The pair comprised the top two in the 200-yard event, with Kain (2:24.09) defeating her teammate by 1.5 seconds. OU's Megan Davis finished third, well over two seconds behind.
Earlier, Kain and Rom finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Kain posted a mark of 1:05.31, while Rom followed in 1:07.02.
The Falcon relay teams earned one first-place and one second-place finish. Bennet, Kain and Yu joined Sarah Reinink to place second in the 200 medley relay (1:47.22), while Bennet and Reinink swam with Erica Nieminen and Brittany Szekely to win the 400 free relay in 3:32.97.
Bowling Green's rest time will be very short, as the team faces its first set of back-to-back dual meets since 2009. The Falcons swim the second half of this guantlet at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 29). The meet is in Muncie, Ind. against Ball State.
