November 10, 2011 | Women's Golf
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf program and head coach Stephanie Young have announced the addition of four outstanding golfers who will begin play for the Falcons in the 2012-13 season.
The Falcon women's golf family welcomes Lily Bartell (Hilton Head Island, S.C.), Lauren Diehl (Perrysburg, Ohio), Julia Hoffman (Strongsville, Ohio), and Hannah Lewis (Plainwell, Mich.).
Young said, “We are excited to announce the 2012 class for our women's golf program. I believe each one of these student-athletes will help strengthen our team for the future. This group is extremely dedicated to success on the golf course and in the classroom, as well as involvement within the community.”
In 2008, while living in Arizona, Bartell finished fourth individually and led her team to first overall at the state championship. She was also named to the Junior America's Cup team and the America Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Junior All-Star team.
Young said, “Lily's golf career has taken her all across the country and has included success at the state and national levels. These experiences will surely help her make an impact here. She is a talented student and athlete, and we are looking for great things from Lily next season.”
Bartell excels in the classroom and carries a 3.7 grade point average, which places her in the top ten percent of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society and plays guitar in her spare time. She is the daughter of Brad and Kitty Bartell.
Lauren Diehl will not have to travel far to arrive at BGSU. Diehl currently attends Perrysburg High School, where she is a four-year letter winner for the PHS golf team. During her four years, Diehl has twice been named team captain and was voted team most valuable player in 2009. In 2011, Diehl qualified for the OHSAA state tournament and helped lead her team to the Northern Lakes League championship.
Young said, “Earning an individual berth to the state tournament this season is evidence of Lauren's dedication to the continuous improvement of her game. She also has an impressive resume of leadership experience and honors. Lauren is an outstanding young woman who is committed to excellence in everything she does.”
Diehl, who also plays for Perrysburg's varsity women's basketball team, carries a 3.6 grade point average. She is a student ambassador for the Leadership Toledo Board of Trustees and will participate in the 2012 United States Senate Youth Program. Diehl has received several leadership awards, including the 2011 West Point Leadership Award and the “Student of Integrity” Award as given by the Better Business Bureau at their 92nd annual Torch Awards. She is the daughter of Jeff and Kerry Diehl, and has one sister (Katie).
Julia Hoffman is a native of Strongsville, Ohio and currently attends Walsh Jesuit High School. Hoffman competes on the Southwest Junior Golf Tour and Northern Ohio Junior PGA Tour. As a member of the Walsh Jesuit women's golf team, Hoffman is a two-year co-captain and a 2009 qualifier for the OHSAA Division I state championship tournament. During her senior season, she has been an individual medalist six times.
Young said, “With six individual medalist titles as a senior, Julia knows what it takes to win. She has a passion for the game and is driven and determined towards any goal, whether it be for her team or to improve herself. It will be exciting to add her talents to the mix of our program.”
Hoffman is a member of student government and serves as a student ambassador. She is also a co-founder of the “Big Warrior/Little Warrior” mentoring program at Walsh Jesuit. Hoffman is the daughter of Joe and Lynn Hoffman and has a younger sister (Maria). Both parents are alumni of BGSU.
Hannah Lewis has found success on the state and national level while attending Plainwell (Mich.) High School. She has won national events three times. Most recently, she won the Hoosier Classic for the Plantations Junior Golf Tour with a total of 160 in July 2011.
Also in July, Lewis won a Future Collegians World Tour at Shaker Run event after carding a 161 over 36 holes. Her third title was in July 2010 at the AJGA's Columbus Junior Qualifier at Darby Creek, where she shot a 74.
Young said, “Hannah has solid fundamentals, great length, and a passion for the game. She has competed extensively at the national level and is a true competitor. This mix of talent and experience should add up to much success on the college stage.”
Lewis, who (like Bartell) plays the guitar, succeeds in the classroom with a 4.0+ grade point average and participates in several volunteer and leadership activities. She volunteers with local schools with her family's therapy dogs and also spends time with girls' junior golf camps. She is a member of the AD Captain's Council and attended the Wolverine Conference Student Leadership Seminar as a freshman.
Lewis is the daughter of Bart and Trish Lewis. She has a brother (Jake) and two sisters (Ellie and Mary). You can learn more about Hannah and her family HERE in a video news report after she was earned a high school athlete of the week award in September.
The Falcons are currently on hiatus between their fall and spring schedules. The team will begin the spring portion of Young's sixth full season as head coach in March when the team travels to Hilton Head, S.C. for the Low Country Intercollegiate.
