Eccleston, a native of Toledo, Ohio (St. Ursula Acad.), was a perfect 6-0 as the Falcons wrapped up the fall portion of the 2011-12 schedule at the Green & White Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., over the weekend (Nov. 4-6). Eccleston won flight championships in both singles and doubles at the invite, hosted by Michigan State.
The co-captain teamed with fellow junior Jade Johnson to win a doubles title at Flight C. The wins included a victory over a team from host MSU, and an 8-0 whitewashing of a Ball State tandem. The Eccleston/Johnson duo is now 6-2 this season.
In singles play, Eccleston won three matches with impressive consistency. Each of her wins came in straight sets, with a 6-2 win in one set and a 6-3 triumph in the other.
Eccleston began her run to the title with a win over Mariya Toncheva of Eastern Michigan, and she then topped Kat Lingl of the host Spartans in the semifinal round. In the championship, she dispatched Wisconsin's Aleksandra Markovic in the minimum two sets to claim the Flight B crown.
On the year, Eccleston has a singles record of 12-2. She leads the Falcons in singles victories, is tied for second on the team in doubles wins (10) and is deadlocked for the team lead in total wins (22).
Through only two-and-a-half years at BGSU, Eccleston has moved into the top 20 on all three of the school's career wins lists. She is 18th in BG history in doubles victories, with 57, and ranks 20th in both singles wins (51) and overall wins (108).
In the classroom, Eccleston has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.92 as a health science major.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week honor is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and must have performed well during the prior week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean, as mentioned, have completed the fall schedule. BGSU's next action comes on Jan. 21, 2012, when the Falcons commence the dual-match schedule at Duquesne.
