Falcons Picked To Finish Sixth In East
November 02, 2011 | Men's Basketball
Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team was picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference East Division, as voted on by a 24-member MAC News Media Panel.
Despite returning all five starters from a team that went 8-8 in the MAC a year ago, the Falcons were selected to finish last in the division in 2011-12. The team returns a total of seven players who started at least nine games in 2010-11, including seniors Scott Thomas, Dee Brown, and Torian Oglesby.
Thomas and junior A'uston Calhoun were named All-MAC Honorable Mention at the end of the 2010-11 season. Thomas, who was also named NABC Second Team All-District, has earned honorable mention recognition as both a sophomore and junior.
Fifth-year head coach Louis Orr also added six new players to the mix, including redshirt freshman Anthony Henderson and true freshman Chauncey Orr, coach Orr's son. Both players were named Associated Press Division I First Team All-Ohio as high school seniors. In fact, Bowling Green is the only school in the country with three AP Division I First Team All-Ohio players on their roster (both Miami and Ohio State have two each) as junior Luke Kraus also earned the honor.
Defending regular season champion Kent State was selected to win the East Division and earned 16 of the 24 first-place votes. Defending MAC Tournament Champion Akron was picked second and earned the other eight votes. Ohio was third, followed by Miami and Buffalo. In the West Division, Western Michigan had 14 first place votes and was picked to win the division. Ball State was second and had nine first place votes, followed by Central Michigan with the other first place vote. Toledo was fourth, Northern Illinois was fifth, and Eastern Michigan was sixth.
Bowling Green plays its first game in the Stroh Center Saturday for an exhibition contest against Tiffin at 2 p.m. The Falcons follow by hosting the first regular season basketball game in Stroh Center history on Friday, Nov. 11 (11-11-11) as BGSU hosts Howard at 7 p.m. Bowling Green will then head on the road to face Georgia as part of the Progressive CBE Classic on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in a game televised on ESPNU.
