Brozovich, Fillis Ink National Letters of Intent to Attend BGSU
Bowling Green State University tennis coach Penny Dean has announced the signing of a pair of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Katie Brozovich (Clarkston, Mich.) and Drew Fillis (Toledo, Ohio) will join the Falcon program for the 2012-13 academic year.
“We are very excited to welcome Katie and Drew aboard next fall,” said Dean. “Both the current student-athletes and the coaches are thrilled to add them to our Falcon family.
“Both Katie and Drew are outstanding student-athletes who will enhance the already-amazing achievements of the tennis team in the classroom as well as on the court.”
Brozovich, a native of Clarkston, Mich., is currently a senior at Clarkston High School under coach Mary Jo Colonna. During her junior year, she was the state's top-seeded player at the No. 3 singles flight, and won the state championship with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in straight sets. Additionally, she helped the Lady Wolves win the team title in Division I, the school's first-ever state championship in tennis.
Brozovich was ranked fourth in the state of Michigan, 20th in the Great Lakes region and 169th nationally by TennisRecruiting.net. The daughter of James and Melissa Brozovich, she plans to major in psychology at BGSU.
“Katie is an extremely hard worker, and has many good wins in junior tennis,” said Dean. “She comes in as Michigan state high-school champion at Clarkston.”
Fillis, a native of Toledo, Ohio, is a senior at Ottawa Hills High School under coach Jeff Harst. She finished her career with an overall record of 90-15 and was a four-year state qualifier.
Fillis was a district champion in both 2008 and 2011, and won sectional titles in all four years. She was named to the all-district team in each of her four seasons. Fillis was ranked fifth in the state of Ohio, 22nd in the Great Lakes region and 190th in the nation by TennisRecruiting.net.
Fillis is the daughter of Andy Fillis and Diane Larson, and plans to major in either athletic training or business at BGSU. Her mother is a BGSU alumna as well as a television news anchor at WTVG, the Toledo ABC affiliate.
“Drew is an outstanding player, both in Ohio and in the Midwest, with unlimited talent,” said Dean. “Like Katie, she has an accomplished record and strong work ethic, having qualified for the Ohio state high-school tournament in all four of her seasons. We are pleased to add this local talent to our program.”
The 2011-12 Falcon tennis team completed the fall portion of the schedule in early November, and BGSU is now idle from competition until mid-January. There is one senior, co-captain Jessica Easdale, on the seven-woman squad.
