Bowling Green, Ohio – George Washington knocked down 10 of its first 11 three-point attempts and the Colonials blew open a one-point halftime lead to defeat the Bowling Green men's basketball team 77-56 Wednesday on the final day of the Progressive CBE Classic Bowling Green Subregional.
George Washington made its first five three-point attempts of the second half after taking a 35-34 lead into the break. By the time Nemanja Mikic hit the last of those threes with 14:12 remaining in the game, the Colonials had built a 13-point lead and Bowling Green was unable to get any closer the rest of the way. George Washington shot 65 percent (11-of-17) from three-point range on the night and 61 percent (30-of-49) from the field.
Although the Colonials also shot well in the first half, making 5-of-6 three-pointers, Bowling Green hung close behind 15 points from Scott Thomas and a solid effort taking care of the basketball with just five turnovers. The Falcons used a late 9-0 run in which Thomas scored seven points to take a brief 34-33 lead. George Washington's Bryan Bynes scored with 18 seconds remaining to put the Colonials up 35-34 at the break.
In the second half, Lasan Kromah made a three-pointer on George Washington's first possession as the Colonials went on an 11-0 run to open the stanza before Cameron Black's lay-up stopped the bleeding momentarily.
Thomas, who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished as Bowling Green's only double-figure scorer with 15 points and he added three rebounds. Craig Sealey came off the bench to post nine points and eight rebounds just one night after having nine points and nine rebounds. Jordon Crawford scored eight points and Dee Brown finished with six.
The Falcons committed just 10 turnovers for the game, four less than George Washington, but the Colonials held a 31-24 rebounding edge. After shooting 48 percent in the first half, Bowling Green was just 29 percent in the second half to end the game at 38 percent.
George Washington improved to 4-1 with the win and Bowling Green fell to 3-2. The Falcons will return home Sunday to host Temple at 2 p.m.
