Bowling Green State University running back Anthon Samuel was named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, announced by the league office on Wednesday (Nov. 30) afternoon. Samuel is the first Falcon in 13 years to win this award, joining Kurt Gerling (1998) and Brian McClure (1982) as Falcons to be named freshman of the year.
The true freshman averaged 93.8 yards per game on the ground, third-highest among freshmen in the country and had five 100-yard games in 2011. His 844 yards rushing were the most by a Falcon freshman in school history, surpassing the old mark of 769 yards, set by Chris Bullock in 2006. The Opa Locka, Fla., native finished the year with a 5.9 yard per carry average, eighth-best at BGSU and added 15 receptions for 93 yards in nine games.
Samuel opened the season with 141 yards and a touchdown versus Idaho and added 122 yards and a score a week later versus Morgan State. He was the first Falcon freshman to rush for over 100 yards in his first career game since Freddie Barnes did so versus Wisconsin in 2006 (ran for 158 yards), and became the first Falcon to post back-to-back 100-yard games since P.J. Pope did it back in 2004.
In week four Samuel posted 121 yards and a touchdown in a 37-23 win at Miami, capped by a 96-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, the longest run in Bowling Green history.
After missing the West Virginia contest with an injury Samuel added 59 yards and a touchdown versus Western Michigan and then posted back-to-back 100-yard games versus Toledo (25-105) and Temple (18-112), giving him five 100-yard games on the season, sixth-most in BGSU history.
Samuel added 123 yards from scrimmage versus Northern Illinois, live on ESPN2, registering 12 carries for 73 yards and a career-best 50 yards on seven receptions versus the Huskies. He would add 67 yards and a touchdown in a 29-28 loss to Ohio, before missing the final game versus Buffalo.
Below is a four minute interview with Samuel after finding out he had won the award.
