Samuel Named to CFPA National Freshman of the Year Watch List
November 09, 2011 | Football
Bowling Green's Anthon Samuel is one of 20 players named to the College Football Performance Award (CFPA) 2011 National Freshman Performer of the Year Watch List, announced by the CFPA this afternoon (Nov. 9).
Samuel has run the ball 130 times for 777 yards (6.0 avg.), while adding 13 catches for 75 yards through the air. His 97.1 yards per game rushing is 35th in the country and third among freshman running backs. He ranks first in the country in rushing yards per game among true freshmen.
Samuel has five 100-yard games this season in eight contests (he missed the West Virginia and Kent State games). He opened the year with 141 yards in a win over Idaho, becoming the first Falcon freshman to run for 100 yards in his first career game since Freddie Barnes posted 158 yards in 2006 versus Wisconsin. The following week Samuel ran for 122 yards against Morgan State, becoming the first BGSU running back to post back-to-back 100 yard games since P.J. Pope did it back in 2004.
Two weeks later Samuel ran for 121 yards on 16 carries, which included a 96-yard run in a 37-23 win at Miami. The touchdown run was the longest rush in BGSU history. Samuel has also surpassed 100 yards versus Toledo (105) and Temple (112).
Samuel's 777 rushing yards this season is the most-ever by a BGSU freshman, breaking Chris Bullock's record of 769 yards in 2006. With 223 yards Samuel would become just the 11th running back in school history to go over the 1,000 yard mark.
