GAMBIER, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming team won four of eight events, while Alexis Kain dominated the 100 breaststroke, as the Falcons remained in third place after action on Friday (Dec. 2) at the Total Performance Swim Camps Invitational. The meet is taking place at the Kenyon College Athletic Center in Gambier, Ohio.
Kain owns the BGSU record in the 100 breaststroke and has made winning the event a habit during her Falcon career. During Friday morning's preliminary round, Kain swam the 100 in 1:02.66, over two seconds better than her closest competitor and just five one-hundredths of a second shy of the meet and pool record.
In the championship heat, Kain dispatched the previous meet record and came within a half-second of her BGSU record (1:02.05) when she finished in 1:02.43.
Amanda Rom also qualified for the championship heat with a preliminary time of 1:05.24 but could not compete in the evening race, as she left in an attempt to qualify for the 2012 United States Olympic Trials later this weekend. Freshman Carmen Young moved into the top eight and took Rom's place in the final after qualifying ninth (1:06.98) in the prelims. Young finished eight after swimming the 100 in 1:06.90.
Fellow freshman Stephanie Boyle competed in the consolation heat and placed 11th with a mark of 1:07.47. Both Boyle and Young set personal records with their evening times.
The Falcons' two other individual event victories occurred in the 50- and 200-yard freestyle swims. In the 50 free, Brittany Szekely and Sarah Reinink swept the top two spots in the championship final after both qualified in the top four earlier in the day. Szekely won in a sizzling 23.66 seconds, while Reinink trailed by an eyelash and ended the race in 23.71 seconds.
Both Emily Bennet and Laina Reisenfeld scored points for BGSU in the consolation heat. Reisenfeld's time (0:24.55) was a personal best.
As a team, the Falcons did even better in the 200 free. BGSU qualified three swimmers for the championship final, and Emily Waller took top honors with a time of 1:52.43. Erica Nieminen (1;53.51) and Jen Beatty (1:53.31) each set personal-best times in the preliminary race then placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the final.
Andrea Brown swam in the consolation race and placed 12th overall, while four other Falcons earned spots in the bonus consolation heat.
After winning the 200 free, Waller swam in the 400-yard individual medley. She qualified sixth (4:31.91), then placed eighth (4:34.13) in the evening race. Waller's time in the prelims ranks tenth on the Falcons' all-time list.
Bowling Green also had solid races in the other individual events. Vicky Yu earned second place in the 200-yard butterfly after traveling the distance in 2:01.40. Meanwhile, two entries were made in BGSU's all-time top-ten list for the 100 backstroke.
Freshman Haley Roberts swam to the sixth-best time in team history and improved on her preliminary time by over one second as she finished in 0:58.30 during the consolation final. Jen Beatty moved into the seventh slot with her prelim time of 0:58.34. She finished seventh in the championship heat. Alexa Harris, who already owns a top-ten place for the 100 back, took third place (0:57.20).
Friday evening's schedule also included two relay events. The Falcons' primary team, which consisted of Harris, Kain, Yu and Szekely, won the event with a top time of 3:47.67.
Emily Bennet led a group that included Szekely, Nieminen and Reinink in the 200 freestyle relay, and that team earned second place. Bowling Green entered two other relay teams in the 200 free. One of those placed sixth overall, while the other placed 11th.
The Falcons ended Friday's schedule with 474 points and are in third place behind Kenyon (578) and the University of Pennsylvania (688). The meet concludes on Saturday with two more relays and six other individual events.
