GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming team won six of eight events and maintained their third-place standing on Saturday (Dec. 3) as they concluded the three-day Total Performance Swim Camps Invitational. The meet was hosted by Kenyon College at the Kenyon Athletic Center in Gambier, Ohio.
The Falcons won five of the day's six individual races, all by different swimmers.
In the 500 yard freestyle, BGSU swimmers took the top two spots in a very close race. Emily Waller continued her successful weekend by earning top honors with a leading time of 5:00.42. Teammate Megan Bomicino followed very closely at 5:00.50.
Andrea Brown (5:05.31) and Katie Womack (5:08.57) both earned points for BGSU in the consolation race. Each of the four swimmers improved on their times from the preliminary races.
In the day's other freestyle race, three Falcons earned spots in the championship final of the 100 free. That trio was led by champion Sarah Reinink, who earned her crown with a mark of 0:51.54. Brittany Szekely finished fifth (0:52.59), while Emily Bennet took seventh place (0:52.92).
Laina Reisenfeld and Jen Beatty's strong performances in the consolation final gave BGSU five of the event's top 12 swimmers, while Erica Nieminen also scored points in the bonus consolation heat.
Alexa Harris won the 200 yard backstroke by over two seconds with a winning time of 2:02.59, while Nieminen helped the Falcon cause by placing eighth. Jen Beatty (2:09.07) again competed in the consolation race, and she was joined by Haley Roberts, who placed 13th (2:08.26).
After breaking a meet record on Friday, Alexis Kain threatened another on Saturday when she won the 200 yard breaststroke. Her final time (2:16.87) was just shy of the meet record, which stands at 2:16.10. Stephanie Boyle also swam in the championship final for the Falcons, and her time (2:25.77) earned seventh.
Carmen Young earned second place (tenth overall) in the consolation race.
Not to be outdone, Vicky Yu captured the meet title in the 100-yard butterfly. She won a tight race with Kenyon's top butterfly swimmer by registering a mark of 55.76 seconds. Three other Falcons earned points in the event by competing in the consolation swims.
In the one individual event not won by a Falcon, Boyle led all Falcon entrants in the 200 yard individual medley by placing 13th with a solid time of 2:11.89.
The team's other victory on Saturday occurred in the 200 yard medley relay. Harris, Kain, Yu and Reinink combined for a winning time of 1:44.30, which outpaced Kenyon's top team by 0.26 seconds. BGSU's second team (Beatty, Young, Bennet and Szekely) placed fifth.
The Falcons placed fifth in the final race of the meet -- the 400 yard freestyle medley. Bennet, Szekely, Reisenfeld and Reinink swam the distance in 3:30.45. Two other Falcon relay groups finished in the top eight of the event.
BGSU swimming head coach Petra Martin said, "I am very happy about our performances this weekend. The girls swam a lot of races and were pretty tired, but they stayed tough and raced hard every time they hit the water. We are in a great place as a team and are excited for February."
Overall, Bowling Green swimmers and relay teams won ten of the 18 events held during the TPSC Invitational. BGSU placed third in the final standings with 878.5 points. The University of Pennsylvania (1187) won the meet, while Kenyon (1071.5) finished second.
BGSU swimmers now take a month-long hiatus and will resume their dual meet schedule in January.
