Falcons pick up 5-2 neutral-site win Saturday
The Bowling Green State University tennis team took two-thirds of both the doubles and singles matches, posting a 5-2 victory over Colorado State University Saturday (Feb. 19). The neutral-site dual was held on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
With the win, the Falcons finished the weekend with a 1-1 record, and BGSU is now 7-3 in dual-match action this year to date. BGSU dropped a 5-2 decision to host Air Force on Friday (Feb. 18).
Senior co-captain Christine Chiricosta, already the owner of one BGSU career wins record, tied another record on Saturday, matching the school mark for singles wins.
The Rams drop to 2-3 in dual matches this spring.
BGSU took the doubles point with wins at the first and third flights. In top-flight action, Christine Chiricosta teamed with sophomore Maddy Eccleston, breezing to an 8-2 win over their CSU foes.
The other two doubles matches were much closer, with each school winning one. The second-flight match saw the CSU duo of Lauren Mulhern and Kaley Schultz pick up a narrow 8-6 win over freshmen Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland. At the third flight, however, sophomores Mary Hill and Katie Grubb outlasted their opponents, winning by a 9-7 count.
In singles action, BGSU's four wins included three in two sets. The lone three-set win for the Falcons came at the top flight, and was fashioned by Christine Chiricosta. The senior battled the Rams' Caitlin Fluegge through three very closely-contested sets. Chiricosta captured the opening set by a 7-5 score, only to see Fluegge win a 7-6 second set. In the third set, Chiricosta again came through with a 7-5 victory.
The win was the 81st career singles victory for Chiricosta, tying the school record set by Stefanie Menoff (2006-09). Chiricosta, who already owned the BGSU combined career wins record, now has 161 total victories. She has 80 career doubles wins, four shy of tying that school mark.
Freshman Emily Reuland snapped a four-match singles losing streak in a big way, losing only two total games in her sweep of Schultz at the fifth flight. Reuland won each of her two sets by a lopsided 6-1 verdict.
Hill downed Tori Arneson at the second flight, losing a total of six games. Nikki Chiricosta swept Mulhern as well, in a pair of close sets, to capture the third-flight match.
CSU's two points came at the fourth flight, where Veronika Wojakowska topped Eccleston in three sets, and at the sixth flight, as Melissa Holzinger defeated junior co-captain Jessica Easdale in two close sets.
The Falcons return to the Midwest to prepare for a match at Detroit next weekend. The Falcons will meet the Titans on Sunday, Feb. 27, in the Motor City.
